Ancient Rome was a flourishing civilization that started around 800 BC and existed for approximately 1200 years. It started off in Rome, and grew into one of the largest and most powerful empires in ancient history. It was ruled initially by monarchs, then became an aristocratic republic, and shifted towards being a progressively more repressive empire. The empire spread to Southern, Western and parts of Eastern Europe, Asia Minor and North Africa. In many ways, the Roman and Greek empires shared a number values and systems (Nordqvistv).

The rejection of traditional medicine, the acceptance of simplistic medical notions, and the acceptance of imaginary observations indicate a loss of confidence in the future of society and a pessimistic view of the capacity of man to overcome external difficulties by reason. In a way, it was a leap backward, a return to magic and the supernatural. The value of science was questioned.

The end of ancient medicine really coincides with the end of Rome. Luke all the great stories that end in ruin and defeat, the story of the fall of the Roman civilization is sad, perhaps because it is a reminder of the inevitable end of all things (Prioreschi).
