1. My role in the group I was nominated as the group leader and played an active role in choosing and narrowing our area of research. As I work in a newsroom, and our issue of gag laws in detention centres was such a dominant topic for a number of weeks, I offered a lot of news articles and sources for the group to read which I posted on our Facebook page. Being the group leader I also organised a majority of meetings, and assigned people roles after discussions with the group as to what they were most interested in. I assisted group members after they wrote up their sections, offering suggestions and proof-reading what they had done. For future group work, it would be better to have more face to face contact and organisation to tease out our ideas. 2. The way my group worked My group worked very well. We were organised and kept constant communication to see how we were all travelling with our work. We all decided what we wanted to do at our first meeting, based on what we were most interested in, as it seemed to be the fairest way to divvy up tasks. We maintained contact though a Facebook page, and also created a Google document so we could all edit each others work easily. Everyone in the group was very open to suggestions and took advice on board. Work was shared very I really enjoyed the author’s thoughts on why average people think free speech is important. She says: “It’s a bit like asking people if they think democracy is good — hardy anyone would say no. Freedom of speech is like that; there is a broad generalised consensus that it exists and that it is important”. She also described the ‘legal culture’ surrounding freedom of speech, which really enhanced my understanding of how the right is enforced, and its limitations on a national and international level, giving me the knowledge I needed to do the
