Increased knowledge of a child’s developmental milestones can lead to early detection of developmental delays and health issues is beneficial to parents and professionals that work with children. Knowledge of the development of different types of play gives educators and parents a foundation for proper teaching strategies. Goodman (1994) reported that the preeminent teaching for young children happens at the midpoint of a continuum between play and work. Therefore, it is worth understanding the contextual origins and current research related on these issues. At the upcoming National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) Conference, I will be handing out flyers to educate people on the history and present research for a key issue with the field of early childhood.
The specific conference subtopic that I will be addressing is the role of play in supporting healthy development and learning in young children. Play is very significant for a child during the early childhood years. Play, on the other hand, is difficult to define. Understanding the term play from an academic point of view is critically important to early childhood educators. Many researchers have tried to define play, in particular Erik Erikson, Jerome Bruner, and Lev Vygotsky. They have been able to contrast their research studies of play in order to better define it. Erikson (1963), for example, suggested the following definition:

Before I begin my presentation and introduce my keynote speaker, you will be getting a several handouts that consist of “The History of Play” (Appendix A), “Current Research” (Appendix B), “Types of Play” (Appendix C), and “Annotated Bibliography” (Appendix D). These handouts will provide participants with a research-based overview of the conference subtopic. Therefore, attendees can gather more information on play can useful in their professional or personal life.
In summary, there are many important subtopics being addressed at the conference. Addressing the role of play and educating other about its impact on healthy development and learning in young children is a wonderful learning experience. It’s an opportunity to educate professional about ways to encourage development among children, which will benefit many children.
