The term play is difficult to define as every individual has their own interpretation of what is defined as play and what is not. One definition given is that “play is to engage in games or other activities for enjoyment rather than for a serious or practical purpose” Concise Oxford English Dirctionary (2001). On the other hand, Children’s Play Council, (2002) defines play as “freely chosen, personally directed and intrinsically motivated behaviour that actively engages the child”. Therefore no two definition will be the same.
Initially, Children were seen as “little adults” where childhood was no different to adulthood as stated by Aries. Later the perception of childhood was seen as a distinct phase and John Locke believed children were “blank slates waiting to be filled with knowledge”. Also Rousseau theorised that “children have an innate (pre-programmed) drive to explore and learn” (Andrews.M.2012) Therefore childrens play became a focus. This leads to the question what is the function of play? Bob Hughes came up with 16 “taxonomy of play types” categories which ranged from symbolic play to imaginative play. Prior to this list ,the types related to the development activity in children was created. These were social play, physical play, Intellectual play, Creative play and Emotional play. However many of these types cross boundaries. (Hughes 2002 cited in Andrews.M.2012:31) In this essay i will be discussing the role of play in relation to the above development types.

In conclusion, from the research above, play has been shown to be essential for children at such a important stage in their lives to development them for the future. “Play is a fundamental human right for all children, regardless of age, gender, culture, social class or disability” A world that understands and supports children’s play is a world that is likely to be “healthier, more vital, more alive and happier than a world without play.” (Gleave.J. Cole-Hamilton.I 2012:12)
