The research was completed in 2005 by Lesley Bartlett who is a professor in Columbia University, she contends that people are using cultural artefacts to form their identities. According to Bartlett (2005), “cultural artefacts are objects, symbols, narratives, or images inscribed be collective attribution of meaning” (p. 3). The author demonstrates how people are using these artifacts to develop their identities by providing an example from her work experience in Brazil. In Brazil, the inkpad is called “the father of the donkeys” (Bartlett, 2005, p. 4). It is used as an artefact to discriminate people who cannot read or write. Therefore, such people are recognized as the illiterate. Bartlett (2005) concludes her article by saying that there should be “critical literacy classroom” where students critically discuss the cultural artefacts that are crucial to create new identities and social interactions (p. 7). The article shows an interesting facts that literacy is more developed through acquisition than through learning which can be observed from society that people acquire the ability to interact with others by learning from mistakes. This paper is a broad study of how cultural artefacts are used. I think this research will partially help me in my paper. .... The authors conclude that YouTube has proven that it is a very flexible environment that could be used for social movements. However, such flexibility can result in making it sophisticated to scholars who are trying analyze it. Since this article was done last year it can be an authentic source that reflects the current situation. Getting into the context of the research, I think that comparing two cases is not enough since the usage of social media has increased dramatically. In addition, I think they should have compared cases that were in a very close time frame because it will lead to a very relevant results. This article will firmly help me in my research because it is discussing the usage of social media in social movements. This is surprisingly relevant to what I will include in my article about how Facebook was used by Egyptians to organize their revolution.
