Recommended: Contemporary issues in nursing informatics

Nursing has seen changes in recent years regarding informatics. Informatics has become a specialty in professional nursing as well as a requirement for competency in the workplace. Electronic health records and medication administration are just two pieces of basic informatics that many nurses deal with every day. Informatics should never take away from patient care, but instead be used as a tool to enhance and perfect care. With the impact informatics has on nursing, there are many changes coming, and I intend to play a role in the changes with my future as a nurse.
Influence on Nursing
Informatics has a huge impact on nursing. Informatics is combined with nursing, “its information and knowledge and their [science and informatics] management with information and communication technologies to promote the health of people, families and communities worldwide” (Topaz, 2013, para. 1). Information, technology, and computers are all implemented into a nurse’s daily routine. Whether she is documenting vital signs, obtaining a medication from the Pyxis system, or looking at the trends of an implementation on her floor, the nurse is surrounded by informatics. She is able to do things she was not before, like charting in the patient’s room at the bedside. The nurse can also have a portable database full of information about medications, diseases, and teaching hints with her at all times. Nursing informatics can be applied to practice, administration, education, and research (Hebda & Czar, 2013). Along with the expansion in technology, nurse’s roles and patient outcomes have also improved.

...matics into my daily routine. These tools will allow me to make the most out of my days, and hold my care to a higher standard. Informatics has come a long way and will continue to change health care for the better.
