To fully understand what life was like 50 years ago my generation would have to go to our grandparents. The ones who, today, still do not understand Facebook. So many advancements in everyday life have been made to make things easier, better, faster, stronger and even healthier. Compared to 1964 Americans had a completely different diet than right now, and in 2064 it will be even more changed.
To get an idea of how times have changed, imagine just finding out that smoking cigarettes could be harmful to you. It was not known to the public that tobacco had long term effects on your health until 1964. It wasn’t until 1970 that efforts were made to keep water and air safe and clean in America. The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, made permanent in 1974, educated America about how to stay healthy. In 1990, the Nutrition Labeling Education Act was signed, giving the public a better way to stay informed about what was going into their bodies. Healthy People 2000 gave more information along with its follow up, Healthy People 2010.
Engineering effected all of these advancements. In 1968, a chemistry Nobel Prize winner created the term Orthomolecular Nutrition, giving people the right knowledge to eat food that would give them the healthiest life. By the end of the 1960’s Dr. Borlaug had helped save countries from starvation with his engineering advancement in crop production. Pesticides and fertilizers helped advance the way we grow crops today. In 1974 the Universal Product Code made buying nutritious food easier for the public. ...ought ridden areas. Changing seeds to adapt to certain climates could end food shortages in artic or tropical areas. The possibilities are endless! Engineers can drastically change the health of millions of people by finding out how to make certain produce grow in areas they usually cannot grow.
The future holds millions of opportunities for advancement in engineering. Today’s greatest technologies may seem cave man like compared to what is to come in the next 50 years. Genetic engineering will have improved to extremes we do not know yet. People in the future will have better foods to keep them healthy. We will be able to fight off cancer and other life threatening diseases with food from the grocery store. The term “An apple a day keeps the doctor away!” will have a whole new meaning 50 years from today when engineering in nutrition will have changed the world.
