The Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) counselor is a unique person in a unique field. Not only does the counselor work at an individual level they look at the family system and how the family unit works with each other. When the family unit is dysfunctional the MFT counselor develops a treatment plan with the family to assist them in learning how each person works within the system and affects the behaviors and ideals of the others in the family unit. What makes MFT a unique profession? In the context of Marriage and Family Therapy it is a unique profession as those who choose this specialty seem to at the very least have the same basic characteristics. The MFT counselor when employing this model assists the client with developing and using their own strengths, abilities and skills to overcome the problem. When the counselor helps the client separate him or herself from the problem it is addressed in an easier manner. The client is then in able to process the problem in a more constructive manner as they will feel safer when they lower their natural defense mechanisms and resistance against the therapeutic process. In a clinical setting this would be employed in a respect based environment where the couples or families will be in a non-judgmental environment. The counselor needs to promote that safe environment by promoting values and helping them flourish through respectful and meaningful exchanges through externalization of the problems. In using this model with clients this would be workable as it doesn’t change the actual client or the family it challenges and changes their beliefs and values. The counselor discovers what their roles in the family are finding out how the behaviors and ideals which are the negative aspects of the story. Clients are then taught how to remodel these negatives into more positive behaviors and thoughts which brings new viewpoints to the client and the
