Conversation is the chief way for people to interact despite the prevalence of social medium. Not only a dialogue can detect words spoken by the interlocutors, but also their mindset, relationship and intention. Transcript plays a very important role in this regard. In this short video clip students from five countries are having a party with the lecturer. There are three native English speakers among them. The atmosphere is lack of warmth as each is in awe to search for an appropriate subject. They are obviously not familiar with each other. Conversation Analysis was the most appropriate to use to analyse this data as the conversation was naturalistic and not manipulated or set up by a researcher. The conversation in question was transcribed using the Jeffersonian style of transcription (Jefferson, 2004) and the transcript was then read, with the conversation features that were significant to gossip and storytelling being singled out. In this assignment, I will be conducting a Sociological analysis of a piece of naturally occurring interaction between two people. I will complete this by doing a transcription the piece of interaction using the work of Harvey Sacks and his work on conversation analysis. For this the piece of interaction I have used is that off a radio station. This involves George Galloway hosting his programme on Talk Sport and having a debate with a male who phones into the show. For this piece of interaction I will highlight many key theories that are covered in conversation analysis, such as turn taking, arguing, teasing and clashes of characters within the discourse. I will develop these aspects within this assignment and implementing this into the chosen discourse interaction.

The article titled “Language Use in Family and in Society” written by Lee Thomas and Linh Cao, is about how language can affect a single family in a terrible way. Thomas teaches linguistics at the University of Nevada, Reno, and Cao is an English teacher at Sparks High School located in Sparks, Nevada. Cao has much background information on the topic because she herself is part of the family discussed in this essay. Their concern with a language barrier is that it leads to confusion and frustration within the family. They give examples of families becoming more distant due to miscommunication and their sense of loss. Imagine trying to speak with your mother and only understanding half of what she says. In Maxine Hong Kingston’s autobiographical piece “Silence”, she describes her inability to speak English when she was in grade school. Kindergarten was the birthplace of her silence because she was a Chinese girl attending an American school. She was very embarrassed of her inability, and when moments came up where she had to speak, “self-disgust” filled her day because of that squeaky voice she possessed (422). Kingston notes that she never talked to anyone at school for her first year of silence, except for one or two other Chinese kids in her class. When it comes to communication there are many underlying things that effect the communication besides what is being said these things are nonverbal and unwritten communication. These things are what the mind sees or hears and you don’t necessarily have to recognize those subtle changes. Whether it is in the things you see from subtle facial expression change of the eyes squinting and a turn of the head as something is being spoken, or if it is the raise of the tone of the voice at the end of a sentence. Many of these things can change the whole meaning of what is being said for ether a positive way or a negative way. ‘Mother Tongue’ a story by Amy Tan tries to take us through the different events one should change the manner in which he or she uses language with the listeners. As the speaker, one should use the appropriate language for the right audience so as to avoid circumstances in which language barrier can occur. The language which Tan uses with her mother is quite different from the one she uses with her listeners when engaging in public or official talks. It is quite evident that when Tan was confronting the stock broker who wanted to con her mother she changes her diction which matched a sophisticated language from the one her mother used. When people choose to not disclose important information or lie they can feel a tug at their being, which makes them question who they are and why they feel the need to be secretive or lie. At some point, people all feel the need to be truthful and to speak what is on their mind, this is where genuine dialogue comes into play. When one turns towards the other and openly tells them what is on their mind, they usually feel a sense of relief. Spoken word is a broad term that encompasses many mediums of art and literature. Slam poetry, motivational speeches, rap, and song are all popular ways the world interacts with spoken word. However, despite the large amount of people that participate in spoken word, few see it’s value, and may often look down upon it. Searching it on the internet brings up hundreds of articles titled, “Why I Hate Spoken Word” or “Why Spoken Word Is Bad”. Many don’t even bother listening to it, nor understanding what it’s trying to show. Nonetheless, this doesn’t stop many artists and writers to continue with their craft.
