Throughout Cormac McCarthy’s story The Road, it speaks about how a boy and his father are living in a post-apocalyptic world full of all kinds of dangers. First off the mother has died, by committing suicide, and neither the father want to be alive, except the father keeps telling the boy that he should not kill himself or even think about killing himself. When reading this book it struck me to even think about how it would have been living in this kind of post-apocalyptic world at such a young age, as the boy was. What strikes me the most is that the boy was able to keep his compassionate and helpfulness throughout the story. Whether Cormac McCarthy meant to display this symbol, this is what the first thing that came to me in my mind. Throughout the bible Jesus did many things, he healed the blind, rose people from the dead, and even turned water into wine. The main thing Jesus was able to do was not just performing these miracles for people to see, but more to show his love and compassion to others. Jesus knew why he had come to the earth and that purpose was to show mankind of God’s love for us. God sent Jesus his son to be the symbol for hope and for love. Many times Jesus showed his love for mankind and even had that love and compassion spread through to his twelve disciples. Jesus taught them the ways that were needed to be followers of Christ and they were true to these methods. Jesus was the true symbol for love and compassion, which is why people had a hard time understanding and believing that he was the true son of God. People thought that Jesus was supposed to be the one who was to condemn the sinners and bring back judgment. But little did they know that Jesus did not come back to condemn the world but to save it from their own mistakes. The characters are unidentified, generalizing the experience and making it relatable – meaning similar instances can happen to anyone, not just the characters in the novel. When the man and boy meet people on the road, the boy has sympathy for them, but his father is more concerned with keeping them both alive. The boy is able to get his father to show kindness to the strangers (McCarthy), however reluctantly the kindness is given. The boy’s main concern is to be a good guy. Being the good guy is one of the major reasons the boy has for continuing down the road with his father. He does not see there is much of a point to life if he is not helping other people. In Cormac McCarthy's 2006 play, The Sunset Limited, McCarthy gives the reader very vague information about the setting and surroundings of the conversation that is occurring throughout the entire work. In the opening stage directions, an essential prop to the play is the "door [is] fitted with a bizarre collection of locks and bars" (3). The image of the locks is referenced a multitude of times within the duration of the play, as the two men, Black and White, sit at a table and debate the ways of the world. This conversation stems from Black saving White from committing suicide the previous morning and ineffectively tries to keep White from leaving to end his life. In Cormac McCarthy’s The Road, the author makes various references to the Bible and to religion. Those references also can be compared on how they have changed the way of humans in real life. Along with how the boy maintains his innocence throughout this whole book even when he witnessed events that could’ve changed him. The man tried to the best of his abilities to preserve the innocence of the boy. Through all of the obstacles that they both faced, the man managed to keep the boy safe and even in his last moments he was sure that he taught his boy how to tell when people were good.
In Cormac McCarthy’s Sci-Fi novel, “The Road”, two mysterious people, a father and his curious son, contact survival of the fittest during tragic apocalyptic times. With a shopping cart of food and supplies, they excavate into the remains of tattered houses, torn buildings and other sheltering places, while averting from troublesome communes. In the duration of the novel, they’re plagued with sickness that temporarily unable them to proceed onward. Due to the inopportune events occurring before the apocalypse, the wife of the son and father committed suicide due to these anonymous survivors lurking the remains of earth. The last people on earth could be the ‘bad guys’ as the young boy describes them. In page 47, the wife reacted to this, stating, “Sooner or later they will catch us and they will kill us. They will rape me. They'll rape him. They are going to rape us and kill us and eat us and you won't face it. You'd rather wait for it to happen. But I can't.”
he Road, written by Cormac McCarthy was inspired by a trip he took with his young son to El Paso Texas. He was imaging what the town would look like 100 years into the future and he though of “fires on the hill” and then thought about his son's safety. McCarthy admitted to having conversations with his brother about different scenarios for the apocalypse. For example, cannibalism, “when everything is gone, the only thing left to eat is each other.” He made some notes about this vision of his, but didn't act on it until a few years later in 2006, while in Ireland. He started and finished the novel and dedicated it to his son, John Francis McCarthy.
I am interested in seeing the two texts from the perspective of contemporary culture in the two countries – the research into what the humanity is going towards, and how it can end. → Could it be that the decline of moral grounds in the contemporary society, consumption-oriented culture opposed to the spiritual development (not necessarily religious) and excessive confidence in human power are leading to the complete destruction of society as we know it?
This book was very interesting and pleasurable to read, I found myself intimately connecting with the characters. In some ways I found myself walking in “the man’s” shoes, not caring about humanity, and only protecting the one most precious to him (me). In some instances I also sided with “the boy” clinging to the hopes of a brighter world where there is still some purity in civilization. This novel The Road by Cormac McCarthy is a true masterpiece and I recommend it to anyone looking for a phenomenal read.
Chopin uses spring time and nature as a symbols of the renewal and hopefulness Mrs. Mallard is feeling now that she believes her husband has died. Chopin writes that in her room Mrs. Mallard "could see in the open square before her house the tops of trees that were all aquiver with the new spring life," (307). Spring represents new life and Chopin uses that representation in order to suggest that Mrs. Mallard feels like she too will have a new life now that her husband is dead. This is not what the reader would expect a new widow to feel, but Chopin uses this symbolism to foreshadow future events in the short story.
In the work The Road by Cormac McCarthy a father and son struggle to survive in a post-apocalyptic world with evil surrounding them. They always refer to themselves as, “The good guys,” (McCarthy 66) and try to not become evil. They see things like cannibalism as evil, and would rather go hungry than succumb to this evil. The father constantly tries to keep the child’s eyes away from the gruesome scenes that characterize this environment.

During a war, soldiers tend to take with them items from home, kind of as a security blanket. The items they normally take with them tend to reveal certain characteristics of their personality. Henry Dobbins is the guy who loves to eat, so he made sure he took some extra food. Ted Lavender was the scaredy cat of the group, so he carried tranquilizers with him.

Vivid imagery is important in The Road, to construct a portrait in the reader's mind that is filled with hopelessness, convincing us to accept that daily survival is the only practical option. He employs effective use of indirect discourse marker, so we feel as if we are in the man’s thought.
