The Metropolitan Museum of Art Items displayed in museums hold historical significance and are representative of society’s culture. Preserving valuable collections for education and enjoyment is a primary role of museums. While fulfilling this role, the architecture of the museum is also an important factor. Historical buildings are converted into museums and architects must consider the use of the space and the museum’s purpose during their initial design. Other museums are built with a clear purpose in mind. As museums are designed, many characteristics are determined. Display and storage spaces as well as visitor services impacts museum’s functionality. Based on the function of a museum, architectural requirements are different. …show more content…
The “superstar” museum gained this status by considering every important detail during its establishment and initial phases of conversion from royal palace to museum (Gombault, 2002). As the purpose of the building changed, each room addressed new functions with new requirements. Although the function of the Louvre is different from the building’s original intention, the building is still appears dignified and important enough to display priceless artifacts and painting (Steffensen-Bruce, 1998). This consideration was applied in designing the Met. The Met looked towards the South Kensington Museum (Victoria and Albert) and the “ideal role model” due to its extensive collections and international reputation (Heckscher, 1995). The Met found itself in a similar situation to the South Kensington, because it did not have a building or a collection to start with (Heckscher, 1995). When designing museums, architects strived to create monuments that “prepare and educate the mind of the visitor (Steffensen-Bruce, 1998).” Education is an essential function of a museum. Acquiring, preserving, and properly displaying materials, permits a museum to fulfill this duty (Steffensen-Bruce, 1998). For instance, lighting is a factor that affects the manner in which artwork is viewed and can be properly appreciated. When determining the proper lighting for the Louvre, Comte d’Angiviller, strongly believed that natural, overhead lighting was the most effective solution (McClellan, 1994, p. 72). The same determination impacted the decision to add skylights at the Met. During the initial phase, architects Vaux and Mould, added skylights to the upper floor, and windows to the lower floor that provided a natural light solution (Heckscher, 1995). Additionally, glass-roofed courtyards provided “unimpeded light” for displaying
New York City is known for its wide diversity as a cultural mecca for art,
As I look at the painting of The Adoration of The Shepherds, two artists, Andrea Mantegna and El Greco, showed it different ways with same subjects. First, the title of the paintings is about Jesus's birth. Andrea mantegna artist had lived from ca 1430 to 1506. He established his reputation when he was 20 years old. This painting is the evident of his highly individual style. He worked it during ca 1451 to 1453. He painted it in horizontal format with 153/4x217/8(40x55.6). He used tempera on a canvas that transferred from a wood. In difference, El Greco(Spain 141-1641) worked it with oil color on canvas by vertical format. The size is 125 5/8x707/8(319x180cm). In Greco's painting, the objects are full on the canvas that big two angels and others are placed on top of the middle place, and the people are placed in triangle position based on the landscape. The landscape is very detail. The people I find it that Holy Maria is standing in the middle and the mountain is placed behind of Maria among the landscape things.
The trip to the metropolitan museum was a great trip to learn and to study art. What is art you may ask, well art is an expression you use to show a visual picture. It can be through painting or through sculptures. Some other example of art is music, literature and dancing. For today 's paper we will be talking about art as a sculpture. The two sculptures in this photo are King Sahure and a Nome God and Marble Statue of Dionysos leaning on archaistic female figure (Hope Dionysos). You can find these statues in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. King Sahure and a Nome God is an Egyptian art that was made in 2458-2446 BCE. The artist is unknown. It was during the 5th dynasty and it also belong to the old kingdom. The Marble statue of Dionysos Leaning in the archaistic female figure is a Greco-Roman art. Belonging to the Roman imperial period of the late first century A.D. Augustan or Julio-Claudian period 27 B.C., to 68 AD. It is classified as a stone sculpture and it is made out of marble. The height of the statues is 82 ¾ inches. There is no evidence who was the original artist.
For my study, I visited two museums. First I went to the Guggenheim Museum which is located at Upper East Manhattan, at the corner of 89th Street and fifth Avenue, then I later visited Metropolitan Museum of Art. The reason why I decided to visit two museums is because Guggenheim does not display the kind of art I was interested in, as its main genre of art if Modern art. My focus for this project was studying work from the Renaissance period, by Piero di Cosimo, the painting of” A Hunting Scene”.
One pleasant afternoon, my classmates and I decided to visit the Houston Museum of Fine Arts to begin on our museum assignment in world literature class. According to Houston Museum of Fine Art’s staff, MFAH considers as one of the largest museums in the nation and it contains many variety forms of art with more than several thousand years of unique history. Also, I have never been in a museum in a very long time especially as big as MFAH, and my experience about the museum was unique and pleasant. Although I have observed many great types and forms of art in the museum, there were few that interested me the most.
One of my personal favorite days of this semester was the class trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. It was a long journey to get there, especially with having to walk all the way from Penn Station, but it was a nice day so I couldn’t really complain. Plus, it was worth it because I love museums. The Met is absolutely beautiful, inside and out. I could not believe how big it was and how many galleries there actually were. I can’t wait to go back and see all of them! Our trip mostly focused upon Greek and Roman art, and I found it to be thoroughly interesting. There was so much to look at that I didn’t know where to start. I was in amazement at all of the pieces and the fascinating stories behind them. The two pieces that sparked my interest the most were the marble sarcophagus depicting the myth of Selene and Endymion and the Etruscan bronze chariot.
The Art Exhibit will be contained inside of a large building that is similar in style and construction to the Pantheon, containing exists to five different halls once on the inside. Since the Pantheon was used as a temple to celebrate all of the Roman Gods ("Pantheon"), having this style of building while in Rome is perfect. Since this will be a large container for the art though, it’s meaning changes somewhat. Instead of being a temple that will celebrate the gods, it will be used as a temple to celebrate some of the great works of art have been created in the distant past up to a more recent past. While containing some great works of art, the container must be just as great otherwise the art will lose some of its significant and the ambiance and sensation produced won’t be quite as “special”. What better than to have a Roman styled building inside of Rome? Its frontal area will consist of large supporting pillars that will allow an open area for entrance into the exhibit. Then once inside o...
When French President Francois Mitterand “personally selected Mr. Pei in 1983 to design the Grand Louvre to give air, space, and light to one of the world’s most congested museums,” (Markham, 1989) there were many critics. The press “lambasted the idea of shattering the harmony of the Louvre’s courtyard with a glass iceberg” (Markham, 1989). But Pei proceeded as planned, taking a major risk in creating a glass pyramid structure at the entrance. He did not focus on what the critics would say about his plans, but hoped that the world would see, upon completion, that his vision of a contemporary, functional entrance would not clash with the Baroque style of the Louvre itself.
As you enter the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, remember to bring an open mind with you because inside this museum, located on 5th Avenue and 82nd Street, you’ll discover and learn that there is a specific story behind every piece of artwork you see. One could not just walk around the museum uninterested without having the urge to ask, “Who’s this?” about a particular statue standing before them, it’s just impossible! So, this is why it’s great to be curious and understand that there is always a meaning behind everything, especially in Greek and Roman Art. Now, the experience of seeing such beautiful artwork is different when you’re a college student studying Mythology during your Spring 2016 semester and can actually put a face

On December 7, 2013, the MOMA museum exhibited The Mystery of the ordinary (1926-1938), famous art works of Rene Magritte. Magritte, Belgium’s only surrealist painter describes his works as “de-familiarizing the familiar”, taking everyday situations and tweaking them with a contrasting object. As soon as you step into the exhibit there is a 59 1/4" x 6’ 4 7/8" (150.4 x 195.2 cm) painting on a canvas. In oil paint, Magritte expresses what looks like a violent murder, as a naked dead woman disturbing the interior peace of a room. This sets a contradictory mood for the viewer as they continue observing each art work within the gallery. Walking through the exhibit you pass all sorts of people; from different backgrounds to different age groups, all unifying in conversation trying to interpret and comprehend the art. “I felt that the world. That life could be transformed and made more in keeping with thought and feeling”-Magritte.
I had the pleasure of visiting the Museum of Modern Art in New York city. On top of completing the scavenger hunt, I had an amazing viewing and appreciating the artform of art.

In Boca Raton’s Museum of Art, the piece that inspired me the most was Szilárd Cseke, Installation in Hungarian Pavilion, Venice Biennale, 2015. “He constructs an entirely new site-specific installation. Since the mid-1990s, Szilárd Cseke has been creating installations that deal with themes of migration and identity assembled from found objects and ephemeral industrial materials with moving parts and neon lighting.” (Citation 1)
Since the art museum's beginning, the relationship between art and architecture has been a matter of conflict, even the purpose of art museums have varied extremely over the years. Renzo Piano, the 'Master of Museum design' believes that the physical needs of the art are a priority, taking into consideration its most minute details as well. A museum's primary aim is to display original artworks of the artists. Such spaces can display both temporary as well as permanent collections and can also be used to host other artistic activities such as performance art or music concerts. There is a lot of dissatisfaction amongst people, since ostentatious museum architecture tends to distract the viewers from
