There are many risks that come along with having an abortion that the patient learns about before having the operation ("Abortion"). Cancer is one of the risks. Women with a history if one abortion face 2.3 times higher risk of getting cervical cancer and when the woman has had two or more abortions, the risk rises to 4.92 times. These increased cancer rates for post-abortion may be linked to the disruption of the hormonal changes or stress on the immune system ("Abortion"). Another risk is uterine perforation, in which two to three percent of all abortion patients suffer from, though most go undiagnosed. Damage to the uterus can lead to different problems later in life with pregnancies that can cause fetal malformation, prenatal death, and excessive bleeding during labor ("Abortion"). The risk of cervical damage during abortions is greater for teenagers and for women have second trimester abortions ("Abortion"). If the patient has chlamydia at the time of the abortion, 23% of those patients develop pelvic inflammatory disease within just four weeks. Other risks include endometriosis, which is a post-abortion risk for all woken. Teenagers are 2.5 times more likely to acquire the disease than a women older than 20 ("Abortion"). Out of all the complications that come with abortion, there are eight that are extremely common (DeCharney). They are infection, excessive bleeding, ripping or perforation of the uterus, anesthesia complications, convulsions, hemorrhage, cervical injury, and endotoxic shock. It is very important to be aware of all the risks before making a decision with the doctor. It's also very crucial to pay close attention to any side affects after an abortion.
