Rising to the Challenge: Using Mobile Technology in a Technology-Driven Global Economy

We face an ever-increasing challenge to prepare our students to succeed in a world defined by change — to excel in careers that do not yet exist, and to utilize tools that have not yet been invented. It’s a world where the role of the United States as global innovator and economic leader is threatened by the rising sophistication of countries such as China and India who are training their children to compete for the jobs currently held by Americans. It is also a world where traditional education must compete with pervasive Internet access, and mobile technology permeates all aspects of our children’s lives.

It is in the spirit of Community Consolidated School District 181’s commitment to excellence, and the District Technology Department’s mission to provide each student with the best tools to support learning, that we fully support this proposal to pilot the Apple iPad in a 1:1 learning environment in 5th grade at Elm School. We feel that this proposal is the best way to meet the challenges posed to educators and students today and will serve as an excellent foundation for the further expansion of this pilot to serve all District 181 students.

In order to ensure the successful implementation of this pilot, the District 181 Technology Department pledges to provide the following resources in concert with the Foundation’s contribution:

3 year AppleCare Warranty Coverage including Accidental Damage Protection for the 57 iPads included in this proposal
All expenses related to the provisioning and archiving of up to 60 student email accounts
Adequate technical support to ensure full utilization of these resources

... without the need to expand the District Technology budget.

At the completion of the three-year pilot the program will be evaluated for expansion to all students in grades 3 - 8 likely through a gradual introduction. This will be achievable under existing budgetary levels by assessing a small yearly usage fee from each family of approximately $35 per student.

In today’s world we find ourselves members of a global community. We must adapt to ensure our students have the creative, collaborative, and problem-solving skills necessary to find their place as leaders in that community and to succeed in the future. This pilot will launch an exciting new method of teaching that ensures students’ continued ability to achieve excellence, while preparing them to assume the leadership roles of the future.

Thank you for your time and careful consideration of this proposal.
