Defying the impossible was simply something the leader of one of the greatest reigns in our world 's history was bound to do. Although born in Greece in 356 BC, he comes from the state of Macedonia just north of Greece. Alexander eventually commanded a highly mobile armed force with the help of advanced military technologies for his time. The rise for Alexander was not an easy one. By the 330s his father, Philip II had developed Macedonia into a very powerful ethnic, and territorial state. This indeed was correct when you talk about the ruler of one of the largest reigns in our world’s history. Although the nickname was self proclaimed, Alexander the great had cause for giving himself such a powerful nickname. Mix his larger than life personality with an unstoppable army and you are bound to think of yourself as great, as well as all of the people who fall under your controlled land. The name “Alexander the Great” was not only given, but earned. He was able to command one of the most powerful armies the world has ever seen, he was able to establish a commonality amongst worlds that would have otherwise never been introduced to each other, he successfully redistributed wealth in order to maintain his massive land, and he did all of this at such a young age untested and what some would call unready at the time of his father’s assassination. Nobody was questioning him a decade later however. He was able to prove to not only himself that he was more than qualified to lead such a large force, but he had proven to his older generals, and more importantly the people under his reign. Unfortunately the world will never know what it could have been like had Alexander the Great been around much longer to see his empire flourish and prosper. He might have even gone out to try and obtain even more land. The first matter to consider is what constitutes “greatness”. There are no set standards no checklist, to apply to a person, to determine it they are “great.” The simplest way that I could conceive to decide whether this title should apply to Alexander was to determine if he was, in some way, superior to the rulers that came before or after his reign. The most obvious place for me to start my consideration is with Alexander’s vast accomplishments as a conquerer.

The well-known director, Oliver Stone, spent years studying Alexander and dreaming of making an epic film about his life. Stone's 2004 film, Alexander, was met with reviews that made it sound as if it was mediocre or disappointing, but the problem with it is that in the era of exciting action-driven Hollywood films, Alexander asks viewers to go deeper than they are accustomed. The length of the film was considered too long, but the history of Alexander is so huge that it is actually too short. Since Alexander lived more than 2300 years ago, and much of the information on Alexander's life has been lost over time, it seems to me that Alexander accurately depicts the historical era, Alexander's relationships, battle scenes and the different cultures involved in Alexander's conquests.
