Since the beginning of time, parent have been telling, begging and forcing kids to read. Most kids read, but hated it; in fact if they never picked up a book they are happy. Then, there are the kids that read constantly, day and night. Whenever they have free time, reading becomes their distraction. Personality I read constantly, without remorse it causes me to leave my responsibility, and read instead. So I decide to see if reading has any negative affect on the average humans. As soon as I finish this story I will begin my research, let’s hope it doesn’t affect my grade.
I was told to use the FIU library to get sources for my essay and I began. As I started my research, I quickly discover that most articles talk about getting your child to read. In fact according to recent research, data links the child's vocabulary level to gains in reading comprehension; early childhood educators have a special obligation to teach vocabulary more effectively 1. What I understood from that was the earlier a child start reading the better his or hers vocabulary levels are. In such the child has a better comprehension and a higher understanding then other children their age. This fact is nothing new to me and it isn’t much help to my research. In actuality it goes against what I’m looking for.
The next article that I found was again for reading. In fact it’s promoting reading in Brazil. This article proved that it’s not only in the US they are encouraging children, it’s a worldwide phenomenon. For instant they have a program by local Media Brazil-Angola House of Culture which aims to encourage children to read stories 2. ...hod on curing this unordinary addiction – so far it’s been ok. Though I believe people need a better understanding of this addiction. These are the facts I found out hopefully by the time I turn in the final draft I will find out if the advice work.

On October 10th, 2017 at Springhurst Elementary School, I conducted a “Reading Interest Survey” and the “Elementary Reading Attitude Survey.” These surveys were conducted on a 1st grade student, Jax, to determine what his feelings are towards reading in different settings, what genres he prefers to read, and interests. It was found that Jax doesn’t mind reading, but prefers a few different topics. This was evident through his raw score of 30 on recreational reading, and a raw score of 31 on academic reading.
Pearson UK (n.d.) stated “Evidence suggests that children who read for enjoyment every day not only perform better in reading tests than those who don’t, but also develop a broader vocabulary, increased general knowledge and a better understanding of other cultures. In fact, reading for pleasure is more likely to determine whether a child does well at school than their social or economic background.”
Reading is on the decline and our reading skills are declining right along with the amount of reading we do. This is happening right across the board through both genders, all age groups and education levels, people are busy and they just do not have time to read books that they are not required to read for school or work. There are serious consequences to this neglect of reading that will continue to worsen if ignored. We need to take notice of what is happening to our culture and stop this situation from continuing, we must act to correct these issues that we are faced with. These things are discussed in the essay “Staying Awake’’ by Ursula K. Le Guin who uses the NEA essays “To Read or Not to Read’’ and “Reading at Risk’’ to support her argument that there is a decline in the amount of time that we are spending on reading and our ability to understand what it is that we are reading.

Reading is an essential element in our everyday lives. What was the first thing that you learned in school? It was the ability to read. Exercising that ability by reading voluntarily keeps our minds active when we’re out of school. It is a supplement to our minds. The more you read, the more you know!
Reading can be vital because it "determines the focus of your mind" (Covington). Is reading bad for a person? Does this mean modern literature is partly responsible for the corruption of society because it determines the way people think? Reading can transport people to different places, times, and state of minds. But what you read will determine it all. Even though modern literature makes great reads, it is changing the views of society because magazines send the wrong messages and modern literature only focuses on mystical and fantasy ideas.

Literacy is most commonly understood as reading and writing. But before children can read and write, they need to learn about sound, words, language, books and stories (Raising Children, 2015). Children begin to develop and gain knowledge quite differently and with support and developmentally appropriate learning skills children will also come to understand the connection between letters and sounds. Finally, parents are encouraged to read with their children at home which not only promotes literacy development with the children getting the adequate encouragement and support they need to read and learn from their parents, but also help in the children’s social and emotional development and achieve “more resilience to stress, greater life satisfaction, greater self-direction and self-control, greater social adjustment, greater mental health, more supportive relationships, greater social competence, more positive peer relations, more tolerance, more successful marriages, and fewer delinquent behaviors” (Desforges and Abouchaar, 2003).
