The theme I picked out from the paintings in chapters 19-21 is ‘History and Memory’. Each of the three pieces I chose depicts a significant historical event or time period. It is reasonable that people would want future generations to remember what had happened in order to appreciate the sacrifices and achievements of those who came before as well as to avoid the same mistakes in the future. Art can be used to document the existence of a people, the triumphs, the failures, and the passing of people on both a personal and communal level. (Peters) The act of creating art guarantees a subjective interpretation of history. The artist interprets the subject at hand and creates the art piece in his or her own style, it can never be truly unbiased, because the artist has total influence over the result and has human fallibility. With that in mind we can look at an historical art piece and we cannot see as historical fact but as historical likeliness.

It is symbolic of the migration of African peoples from the rural South and the Caribbean to the urban industrial centers of the North just after World War I. This ironic comment by one of the period’s leading writers, Charles Chesnutt, evokes the irony and mystery of the Harlem Renaissance. Between the end of World War I and the beginning of the Great Depression, African American musicians, writers, and performers dominated the American cultural scene. Another name for the period, the “Jazz Age,” reflects the cultural importance of African American culture at this historical moment. Poetry during the Harlem Renaissance was the way that African Americans made sense out of everything, good or bad, that “contextualized” their lives. When one is describing a “fresh and brilliant portrait of African American art and culture in the 1920s (Rampersad 1994),” the Harlem Renaissance would be the most precise postulation. The Harlem Renaissance proved to America that African Americans also have specialized talents and should also be able to exhibit their gifts. The Harlem Renaissance, originally known as “the New Negro Movement”, was a cultural, social, and artistic movement during the 1920’s that took place in Harlem. This movement occurred after the World War I and drew in many African Americans who wanted to escape from the South to the North where they could freely express their artistic abilities. This movement was known as The Great Migration. During the 1920’s, many black writers, singers, musicians, artists, and poets gained success including Zora Neale Hurston, Langston Hughes, Marcus Garvey, and W.E.B. Du Bois. These creative black artists made an influence to society in the 1920’s and an impact on the Harlem Renaissance.
In the stories, The Things They Carried and How to Tell a True War Story, by Tim O’Brien, every character in the story has his own unique theme in the story. Some are simple like Ted Lavender, his theme is drugs cannot solve your problems, but other characters such as Rat Kiley and Lieutenant Jimmy Cross have much more deep themes, and the narrator of the story finds a new outlook on life in one of the worst places to be at this time. This story takes place during the Vietnam war, a war many American Soldiers have trouble admitting that they took place in. During this story this platoon of men come to terms with death, love, and depression. These men overcome adversity in Vietnam to rethink their life before the war and find new values in life

Prior to this time, books by African Americans were primarily read by other African Americans. With the Renaissance, African American literature as well as black fine art and performance art began to be absorbed into mainstream American culture. What is important in reading this literature, or listening to the music, is to fully understand the underlying meaning behind the words; the sorrowful experiences of the writers, the insistence in self-definition, the search for self-expression, and self-determination, and a striving after what Alain Locke called "spiritual emancipation." The African American history so rich and deep rooted with sorrow, grief, and struggles have and still influence African artist all over the United States.
In Harlem, New York the “New Negro” was born by various intellectuals, artists, musicians, and writers who celebrated cultural creativity and nobility throughout the African-American community. A span of ideas on what it meant to be African-American influenced many people to partake in art, music, and writing. During the 1920’s, the endless innovation made Harlem the “Mecca” for African-American civilization. Contributors and leaders recognized this as a resurrection of identity and spirituality which created, the “Harlem Renaissance.” Although the Harlem Renaissance shaped the African-American community substantially, there was still dispute. White Americans weren’t educated about African-American culture, segregation kept both races from coming together, and discrimination within the black community made light-skinned people suppose they were superior to dark-skinned people. When daylight transformed to nightlife, white people wanted to partake in the fun which usually brought along immense opportunities for writers and musicians.
Remembrance is an integral part of our everyday lives. Both pleasant and unpleasant memories shape who we are as human beings. The definition of memory is two fold 1. “the faculty by which the mind stores and remembers information” and 2. “Something remembered from the past; a recollection” (Google Definition). The life of memory has three stages in which it is created. An event occurs in ones life it becomes encoded and stored in the brain. Following the encoding, the brain then has full access to retrieve the memory in a response to any current activity or thought. Memories are unique to each person. Ernest Hemingway uses the various events in Nick Adams life to expose the reader to the themes of youth, loss, and death throughout his novel In Our Time. Youth very often plays its part in war, and since In Our Time relates itself very frequently to war throughout; it is not a surprise that the theme of youthful innocence arises in many of the stories. In “Indian Camp” the youthful innocence is shown in the last sentence of the story: “In the early morning on the lake sitting in the stern of the boat with his father rowing, he felt quite sure that he would never die.” (19) When this sentence and the conversation Nick and his father have before they get on the boat are combined in thought it shows that because of Nicks age at the time that he does not yet understand the concept of death.
