History is usually written by those in the higher classes of society which has led to a very white-ethnocentric version of history. In “Criteria of Negro Art” Dubois talks about the way that Blacks are not fully represented in history, even when they have played major roles. Negro artists were urged by Du Bois to help show the beauty and truth of Black history through their works. The subject of truth is very important to Du bois becaus...

Portraying the New Negro in Art Essay

- During the late 19th and 20th centuries Blacks in America were debating on the proper way to define and present the Negro to America. Leaders such as Alain Lock, W.E.B. Essay about Feminist Art History

- Feminist art history-A literature review This paper aims at exploring the works of some famous feminist art historians such as Linda Nochlin, Norma Broude, Griselda Pollock, and Rozsika Parker, who focused their literature on the issue of women and art history from the 19th century through the 20th century. Broude states that female feminist art history students are of the belief that they have to rewrite art (Broude & Garrard 1982, 183). However, Broude and Garrard challenges this assumption by inquiring the “what and how” female feminist art history students would go about achieving the task of rewriting art, and what led to this notion of rewriting the history of art and what they intend...   [tags: Literature Review, Art Analysis]

Essay about My Criteria for Film Evaluation

Reputation is inclusive of friends and ratings of the film. Usually my friends and I have similar tastes and we are aroused or repulsed by the same films. Reputation is a strong and stable standard for deciding which film to go to, because with such a large population of movie watchers, major biases don't affect the reputation and ratings are fair and accurate....   [tags: Movie Film Analysis Criteria]

A Review of American Negro Slavery by Ulrich B. Phillips Essays

- A Review of American Negro Slavery by Ulrich B. Phillips Phillips' book is an attempt to provide an overview of the practice and institutions of slavery in the Americas from its beginnings to the 19th century. Writing in 1918, Phillips hoped to provide an account of slavery based upon historical evidence and modern methods of research, rather than ideological motivations. He drew his evidence from the plantation records and letters of slave owners; contemporary travel accounts; court records and legal documents; newspaper articles; and in some instances, the recordings of slaves themselves, rather than what he viewed as more biased sources such as abolitionist writings....   [tags: Slavery Racism Phillips]

Essay on Art Review

- Review #1: New Generation Detroit I went to visit this art exhibit on Friday September 7th, the opening night. I had never been to the Meadowbrook Art Gallery so I had no idea what to expect. It was a smaller gallery than I thought it would be, but it didn’t matter when I took a look at the pieces that were on display. This exhibit was definitely edgy and not really what I’m used to seeing. I could tell that these are new artists that are beginning to start a new trend in today’s modern art world....   [tags: essays research papers]
