Hope is believing that you can overcome difficult situations and bare through the pain. In The Residue Years written by Mitchell S. Jackson, Grace and her son Champ’s story is told through dual perspective which helps the audience understand the emotional obstacles and times of complete hopelessness that both characters faced. The characters are both overcoming their own dilemmas and trying to reunite the family. No matter how hard the two protagonist tried to grasp their hopes, there always seemed to be new issues that held them back. Champ’s hope of one day buying back the Sixth Street house is his goal as the house is the only house they have ever lived in and resembles time his family being together with times of comfort . Champ is doing anything to achieve this dream.While Champ is trying to complete his education, he has to conceal the fact that he is a drug dealer and also conceal the drugs he is holding onto. He is from a place where if you are a black teenanger, you either play basketball in hopes of going professional or hustle and sell drugs. It was also due to the fact that he couldn’t stand seeing his family live in poverty and having to help both Kim and Grace. For Grace, her circumstances were similar to Champ’s. She had to provide for her little boys by committing crime. Both of their lives were filled with drugs. One being an addict and one being the supplier. In an interview with Mitchell S Jackson, he states that “If they did that to my mom, why should I care about others?” reflects the attitude that Champ had when selling drugs.
