Introduction Social networking has made its way into American culture quickly and is more prevalent now than ever before. Many people have different views on the relevance and benefits of social networking, whether they are positive or negative standpoints. Nevertheless, social media and networking is a part of our American lifestyles as a whole. As a Computer Information Systems major and studying the foundations and composition of computer applications, I would like to research the effects that social networks have on underclassmen undergraduate students attending an Historically Black College or University. In order to conduct this research, a study and survey must be held to determine whether social networking positively or negatively affects grade point averages by recording the number of social networks students are actively using and the number of hours spent on these applications in comparison to grade point averages. This research is important because there are many individuals who do not know the effects of their social networking, or lack thereof, has on their grades, sleeping patterns, health, and lifestyles in general. Although this research will focus on grade point averages of students, it will also determine if social networking has effects on other aspects of the college life such as sleeping patterns, health, and awareness. Purpose of Study Individuals should understand that the use or nonuse of social media has negative and positive effects on their lives whether they recognize them or not. Students who excessively use social networking applications can be negatively affected because they are spending too much time on these applications rather than paying attention in class, completing homework, studying, s... ... middle of paper ... ...ocial networks students are actively using and the number of hours spent on these applications in comparison to grade point averages. This research is unique because it will give light to the individuals who are against social networking that will not take to consideration that it has any positive outcomes at all and to those who believe that social networking has no downfalls and are too blinded by the social networking to even notice the affects it has on their own lives. This perspective explains social networking as a way for society to develop social qualities through interactions with others and this method of interaction is commonly accepted and promoted among different cultures, social and education backgrounds irrespective if negative or positive. For instance, social networking can provide a parent a way to communicate with his or her child’s teacher without having to schedule around work or home
Some believe that ‘Social networking sites help students do better at school. 59% of students with access to the Internet report that they use social networking sites to discuss educational topics and 50% use the sites to talk about school assignments” (Procon) However, “If the students checked Facebook just once during the 15-minute study period, they had a lower grade-point average”. (Clemmitt) This shows that social media is the main source of distraction which does not allow individuals to focus on their academic work. This is harmful to society because individuals will not be able to completely focus on a task. Thus individuals would complete their tasks with little thought on how they are doing it. Procon has also mention that “People who use social media have a lower grade point average (3.02) social media than people who don't use social media. (3.82) they also tend to get lower test grades”. This shows that the impact social media had on students’ academic career is negative. With a low grade point average students feel no need to push themselves which leads to low self-motivation. Even though some may argue that Social Media has led to educational opportunities, others may argue that it is has done more damage to academics
With the help of the various social networking sites, students can now actually find easier means to do their assignments, discuss academic topics with their classmates on topics of educational interest, or read more advanced books online, thereby getting fully equipped for their classes. Social networks have removed all the communication barriers that existed before; it is presently easier for students to communicate with various friends and like-minded people all over the world to get professional helps and inputs or opinions on a particular topic (Helou & Rahim,
Overall, are the effects of social networking beneficial or detrimental to people and/ or society? If I asked you a question whether you have a Facebook account or not, you would probably say yes. Social networking has become a global phenomenon and it is being used everywhere and even now when we are discussing. Today, most of us use some form of social media every day, whether it’s for personal communication, self-promotion or marketing.
Michael J. Bugeja, director of the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication at Iowa State University and author of“Facing the Facebook” in The Chronicle of Higher Education, states that the initial purpose of having access to the Internet in the classroom was to give students the opportunity to conduct research. However, this privilege is rapidly being used as a means for students to not pay attention during class. A poll was taken at Iowa State University where 20,247 out of the 25,741 enrollees were registered on Facebook (Bugeja 1). Social networking sites such as Facebook have had some negative effects in academia such as “institutions seeking to build enrollment learn that ‘technology’ rates higher than ‘rigor’ or ‘reputation’” (2), that there has been improper use of the freedom to use technology in the classroom, that employers and parents check Facebook to see what users have been doing, and that technology is an overall distraction in the classroom.
Social network sites is often an easy distraction tool disturbing you when you are supposed to be doing your homework or studies. Many students believe they are capable of multitasking and finishing their work with cohesive and logical connections. Netherlands psychologist Paul A. Kirschnera of the Centre for Learning Sciences and Technologies at the Open University of the Netherlands and Aryn C. Karpinskib of Ohio State University conducted a study examining 219 U.S. university students. Kirschnera found that Facebook users typically had a grade point average of 3.06 while non-users had a grade point average of 3.82. Kirschnera states that he isn’t trying to demonize Facebook, but demonstrate the distracting nature of social network sites (Daily Mail). Students fail to complete their studies and/or homework with cohesive thought because some students give themselves a limit in completing work instead of completing the work as a whole. In the Frontline documentary film Digital Nation, Rachel Dretzin says the following in front of a small group of s...
Social media is so popular that according to a recent article published by forbes.com, “72% of American adults are currently using social media sites; that figure has gone up 800% in just 8 years”(Olenski). Social networking was originally created to simply reconnect people with old high school pals, but in recent years it has evolved into a completely different operation. When social media first originated it was also intended for adult usage, which has in recent years expanded into the usage of all ages. Social media can create a negative affect on lives because it has been proven to be a dangerous addiction, for it takes away interpersonal relationships that are essential in life, and it has been proven to prevent people from being productive in life.
Social media although a great tool can become an addiction ultimately affecting our lives and state of mind. That is why we need to limit the amount of time and information we share on social networks. Although the internet is a tool full of good and bad available to everyone, teenagers and young adults are more prone to falling into the traps of the internet. People also abuse social media and overuse it every day because they are concerned with what is happening every hour. Social media is a tool not a necessity and should never be abused or used as a diary because it could result in unwanted consequences that can hurt us in the future.

Social Media has become a very essential tool in the society; in addition, it has a huge impact on communication and learning process. Social media is defined as websites and applications used for social networking. “As of September 2013, seventy-one percent of online adult use Facebook, eighteen percent use Twitter and seventeen percent use Instagram, twenty-two percent use PInterest, and another twenty-two percent use LinkedIn. (PewReasearch, 2013). In addition, "Between February 2005 and August 2006, the use of social networking sites among young adult internet user ages eighteen and twenty-nine jumped from nine percent to forty-nine percent. The usage of social media had grown drastically.” On social media sites like these, users may develop biographical profiles, communicate with friends and strangers, do research, and share thoughts, photos, music, links, and more” (Socialnetworking.procon,2012). Social media has impacted everyone in several different ways. In this present time, majority of college student use Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Social media has a bold impact college student's grades, social interactions, and the teaching and learning process.
However, there are also some negative effects of social networking sites. Spending too much time on social networking sites affects people’s work and study, and people will become more and more isolated from their friends in real life. Moreover, it is difficult to protect users’ privacy on social networking sites, so it may result in the risk of revealing personal details. All in all, the popularity of social networking sites depends on the copycat effect among people, convenience in themselves, and their good functions. When social networking sites are becoming an important part of people’s lives, people should learn to make the most of these sites instead of wasting time.
Supporters of social networking sites say that the online communities promote increased interaction with friends and family; offer teachers, librarians, and students valuable access to educational support and materials. Social networks are now widespread in our world with existing social networks expanding, social networking sites are being created for educators, medical professionals all accessible 24 hours a day via computer, tablet, smart phone, and Internet-enabled devices. Challengers of social networking say that the sites prevent face-to-face communication, waste time on frivolous activity and spread false and potentially dangerous information.
However, this can prove to be a huge problem for many persons especially students because the use of social media could have a negative effect on students’ academic performance. Some of the ways that social media can have a negative effect on academic performance are that social media can cause procrastination meaning students will spend time on Social media instead of getting their work done in a timely fashion. Also, social media can make students depressed which will surely have a negative on their academic performance. Furthermore, social media gives a wider form of plagiarism that will definitely have a negative effect on students’ academic
The negative effects of social networking sites overweigh the positive. These sites has resulted in an impact of potential hazards to the community. The students are victims of social networks more often than others. This is because the consequences when they learn or find their course material online, they get attracted to these sites to kill their boredom in their studies and also distract them from their duties. Other negative effects of social networking sites include the following:
Facebook is one of the most famous social networking websites which has become a part of the daily routine for most college students. This has led to a question amongst researchers whether students’ use of this networking site influences their academic outcomes. This literature review will examine and synthesize the published current research concerning the impact of Facebook on college students’ academic performance. Even though most studies are inconclusive in determining the relationship between Facebook and academic performance, all researchers contribute to understanding the way that Facebook might affect students’ academic achievement. While some studies speculate that Facebook does not impact academic outcomes, most studies show that there is a significant relationship between Facebook usage and college students’ academic performance, which is indicated by GPAs and students’ engagements.
