Overview
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) is a technology-based university that produces highest number of engineering graduates in Malaysia. The UTM’s mission is to provide quality education for the masses, in line with the vision of the country. Being a public university, the student intake is determined by the senate of UTM and government. There are a variety of students from different academic and social backgrounds who meet the criteria pursuing engineering education at UTM. UTM is focused in creating a vibrant engineering and technological academic culture and fertile intellectual ecosystem that inspire creativity and innovation in engineering fields.
UTM has been renowned for being at the forefront of engineering/technological knowledge and expertise where it has been contributing to the technical and professional workforce of the nation since 1994. Being a graduate focused university, UTM has the highest number of postgraduate enrolment in its specialized field, which is one of the key elements in contributing towards the development of an innovation led economy. Having produced more the 200,000 technical graduates and qualified professional over the years. With the addition of Easy Search feature in 2005, there are currently four interfaces for searching information and there are Easy, Quick, Expert and Thesaurus Search.
All the Compendex’s interfaces facilitate the range of search complexity, from a simple phrase or keyword search to method involving controlled vocabulary, classification codes, special indexing and limits. Compendex also allows user to make a combination of searches across a number of related databases such as Inspec and Compendex. Once a user has obtained an answer to query, user can choose method of displaying information in three way, there are, Abstract, Concise View and Detailed Record.

At this stage of my life, I have many ambitions, the first step of which is to carry out my Masters studies in Automotive Engineering. The Internet has become a popular source for retrieving information on practically any subject. This information can generally be retrieved in a matter of seconds. With the popularity of the internet as a research tool it’s important that the information received is reliable and accurate. In general, when one uses a search engine to perform a search on the internet, the quantity of information returned is astronomical. “In a world of information overload, it is often extremely difficult to get a grip on the correctness, completeness and the legitimacy of the information and material available in the internet.” (Prins).
Learning is a continuous process and the day that you stop learning is the day that you start decreasing your rewards and lower levels of satisfaction. My ardent desire to acquire knowledge has motivated me to pursue higher studies at graduate level, and to take up a career in research in industry. I have taken this decision after carefully considering my academic background, profound interest in research and strong aptitude for problem solving. Banking on an excellent academic record coupled with a keen interest in the ever-growing field of science and technology motivated me to take up engineering.

Information Retrieval is simply a field concerned with organizing information. In other terms, IR is emphasizing the range of different materials that need to be searched. Others researcher said that IR is the contrast between the strong structure and typing a database system with the lack of structure in the objects typically searched in IR. The actual process in information retrieval systems is it has to deal with incomplete or under specified information in the form of the queries issued by users. IR uses the techniques of storing and recovering and often disseminating recorded data especially through the use of a computerized system.
