Introduction In our society today, media is one of the most influential mediums present in the American youth ages 8-18. Kids spend around seven and a half hours a day consuming media in some way, not including texting and talking on the phone. Moreover that doesn’t include the time they are spending multitasking between media sources. Tamar Lewin’s article is directly connected to the results provided by the research study with the goal to objectively make the results public. Kids spend more time engaged in media than they do any other activity proven by kids ability to multitask and the idea that media has become part of their environment. News Article Purpose and Study Fit The effects media can have on kids is quite impactful, which created opportunity for many studies to determine the amount of media consumption by young Americans. The research study by Kaiser Family Foundation resulted in many jaw dropping statistics, which are presented by Tamar Lewin, in the article “If Your Kids Are Awake, They’re Probably Online.” The main purpose of the article was to expose the overwhelming amount of time kids spend connected to media and the possible problems with heavy media consumption. Additionally, the article is very meaningful and newsworthy because it was written to make people more aware of the amount of media kids are consuming on a daily basis. According to Dr. Rich, a pediatrician of Media and Child Health, “with media use so ubiquitous, it was time to stop arguing over whether it was good or bad and accept it as part of children’s environment, “like the air they breathe, the water they drink and the food they eat, (Lewin, 2010).” Again, Lewin’s article is newsworthy because it contains important points of view an... ... middle of paper ... ...ose concerned about advocating the healthy development of kids and adolescents. The research study was the key foundation for the composition of the article and the article used the research study results to make people publicly aware of the media consumption kids are engaging in. Television is a distraction for children and can hurt their cognitive abilities if they watch too much because it is non interactive. In the article,“Multitasking is actually kind of a problem for kids and adults” by Hayley Tsukayama the author went into detail about how parents and their children view their personal media habits. One of the ways that the parents and children viewed their media habits as was feeling the need to respond to texts and notifications immediately. “More than 1,200 parents and teens surveyed, 48 percent of parents and 72 percent of teens said they felt the need to respond to texts and notifications immediately, almost guaranteeing distractions throughout the day” (Tsukayama). This article can be connected to “The Epidemic of Media Multitasking While Learning” both of the articles discussed the different factors of media multitasking among individuals. The article from The Washington Post website gave great insight on multitasking and rather it is bad for students when it comes to learning. I believe that the issue being discussed is very relevant because if students are easily distracted by technology while in their learning environment it results in them not learning

Kaiser Family Foundation said, the average 8-18-year-old spends more than seven hours and 38 minutes on entertainment media on a typical day. Half of those people use media when doing homework. To help address this problem, we need to teach children to respect the integrity and set up rules for their media use.

The media has changed significantly over the past decades. Technology has modified our abilities to expand our communication network, and it allows companies to spread their commercials over many different continents. Research done by Roberts (1993) shows that adolescent and children are often very influenced by media that involves sexual or violent conduct. This research is based on media involving children and adolescents, however this does not eliminate the effect media has on adults (Singer & Singer, 2001, p. 269).

A media panic, or often referred to as a moral panic, is a term that describes how the media is formulating issues amongst our society. Over time, our culture has shifted and caused many conclusions regarding media panics and the relationship between youth and the media culture. Based upon previous knowledge and course readings, I have drawn a very disturbing conclusion; this being that no matter what age, children are willing or non-willingly now under surveillance to determine what kind of role media is playing in their lives. With what I have gathered from the readings and class lectures, most authors strongly believe that different forms of media directly influence children's thinking or perception. What authors and researchers continue to imply is that there is a direct correlation to what youth today see in different forms of media and their behaviours.
What are some the implications media is having on the youth of today? Are parents competing with sophisticated physiologically designed media to keep their children healthy and safe? How and why does advertisement influence the social, physical, cognitive, and moral development of young children? The major influence in the social construct of moral and cognitive development of an individual is the family. Due to the influences on the youth of today, parents need to be more aware, and combat the effects of advertising on children.

People always feel the need to be connected and get their few minutes of media for the day, with technology being more accessible, more people are media consuming, and the youths are accessing the media more often and tend to access multiple things at once.
