As I progressed through this assignment, I realized that I did not use any renewable sources of energy such as wind or solar. Most of my energy was sourced from the use of fossil fuels, with the primary source for heating my home being natural gas and as I researched further, I found that my electricity source was provided by the Martin Drake Power Plant located in Colorado Springs. This is a 254 megawatt coal-fired power plant and provides 1/3 of the electricity to Colorado Springs (Colorado Springs Utilities, 2016). Coal generates 44% of our electricity nationally, and is the single biggest air polluter in the U.S. according to the Union of Concerned Scientist. Coal plants are the nation’s top source of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, the primary cause of global warming and is also a leading cause of smog, acid rain, and toxic air pollution (Coal Power: Air Pollution, 2016). This was very concerning because of the overall effects of air pollution, and the close proximity of the power plant to my community. One of the reasons I moved to Colorado was because of the environment. It’s ...

Energy Sources For Renewable Energy Essay

- Renewable energy sources have been found to cost more than the benefits that are received from the energy sources. There are many different resources that you can use including water, wind, solar, geothermal, and biomass. These energy sources can differ in cost depending on capital, fuel, and operations and maintenance. Some of these sources are not cheap to build but once they are up and running, they have no fuel cost. There are many reasons to determine when, where, or how an energy source is used....   [tags: Wind power, Renewable energy, Solar energy]

Essay on Saving the Planet, One Panel and Turbine at a Time

- ... The U.S. has always tried to make itself number one. It would be logical to think that they would want to continue that tradition, even in the green technology field. The U.S. would have to improve their clean technology to be respected on a global level. “Germany has had policies in place for decades that have resulted in the installation of somewhere around half of the world’s solar panels in its country- even though it has far less sun than places like California”(Yang n.p.). The U.S. contains several sunny places where photovoltaic cells could thrive....   [tags: solar energy, renewable energy sources]

The Benefits of Solar Energy Essay

- The traditional, non renewable form energy is created by fossil fuels, such as coal, gas, and oil. The process begins at a power plant (primary energy source) where, heat exerted from burnin, are transformed into electrical energy. This creates high-pressured steam to form a turbine, which allows a rotor to power the generator. There an electrical current is created through the process of induction, by spinning an electrical current and conductor around each other. There the electrical energy or voltage is sent through a series of transformers, where various circuits until it reaches a building....   [tags: renewable sources of energy]
