The Renaissance was a time of adulation for Humanism, a movement that advocated the intensification of "personal independence," "individual expression," and a renewed élan devoted to the classics. Renaissance, a word meaning rebirth, refers to the cultural epoch wherein Ancient Greek and Roman styles were rediscovered and celebrated as a result of trade expansion and a need for knowledge of lexical works (thus, the popularization of Latin). This attitude concerning rebirth was especially reflected in the multitudes of masterpieces produced up to the sixteenth century: artists expelled certain features from preceding Medieval art and appended their oeuvres with techniques unseen in previous ages. The apex of the Italian Renaissance rolled at around 1490 and lasted for forty years. Some examples of the High Renaissance painters include the following: Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael. Their works outshone their precursors: the High Renaissance artists emphasized anatomy and realism. The number of religious figures in paintings abated during the High Renaissance; in fact, artists began removing certain elements from theological paintings to intensify the realism. For these artists, realism was the palpable, the human, the observable; consequently, an altitudinous rise of the humanistic spirit concomitant with the fall of the spiritual climate became a recognizable feature of the High Renaissance. It was when da Vinci skilfully crafted his Vitruvian Man, the Mona Lisa, and The Last Supper; Michelangelo sculpted David and Moses then; Raphael finished with his School of Athens. Though the High Renaissance was an incontrovertibly beautiful time for the visual arts, immorality was pervasive. Most artists were not careful in managing their hubris and their sin. Two of the three above have been known to have a proclivity for homosexual acts. While da Vinci was particularly insecure about his work, Michelangelo was a perfectionist who tried to rival the nonpareil former. These virtuosos did not accredit God for their talent: acquiescing to the Pope’s wishes were merely done out of their inability to refuse (i.e., furthering their profession). The Middle Ages was a time in history where everyone was faithful to religion as well as others. Also, in the Middle Ages, people were encouraged to always try their best; they were encouraged to strive for the highest achievement possible and to never give up. The Renaissance, however, was more focused on becoming matured and finding a way to be successful at everything one does. During this era, people strived to become all-sided men, also known as; renaissance men. This means they are not only successful in one type of art but in all types of art, as well as math, science, and literature. The Renaissance was a distinct period in time that was separated from the Middle Ages and began a new era.
The renaissance or “rebirth” was a cultural awakening which spanned from the fourteenth to sixteenth century. A growing interest in humanist traits and classical ideas heavily influenced the art during the renaissance. A growing community of artists provided much needed competition for their profession. The renaissance introduced many different and modern ideas but also remained obedient to classical belief. The unique art of the renaissance spread throughout Europe. Northern European art differed tremendously from Italian art.

Though the Renaissance era included all of Europe, Italy was the cradle of the movement. The cities of Florence, Rome and Venice were of great importance to this period. Major artists created art mainly in these three. As the center of Italy, Rome held the residence of the Pope and many other important factors. Throughout history, the Roman Catholic Church was very insistent on promoting their ideas. During this time, they used artists and their creativity to promote the Bible and other aspects of their beliefs. Artists were paid, or commissioned by patrons (often the Pope) to create art they wanted. One of the most ambitious patrons was Pope Julius II, who realized the impact visual images had on people’s ideas (Kleiner, 599). Pope Julius II was called the warring Pope, because he often went and involved himself in wars. He also held very humanistic ideas. Because of this, Michelangelo’s relationship to Pope Julius II was very different from his relationship with Pope Leo X, who succeeded Julius II. Julius, because of his adaptions to humanistic thoughts, he let Michelangelo express himself to the fullest, even when forcing him to paint the Sistine Chapel. Leo X, however, was very critical of everything Michelangelo set out upon. This resulted a strained relationship, and eventually abandonment of projects that were supposed to be completed. It is clear that Pope Julius II had a liking for Michelangelo, while the Medici’s looked on him as a type of lowly artist subject to their will.
The Renaissance was a time period that began in the fourteen hundreds up to the seventeen hundreds following the Middle Ages. This new period regenerated interests in the classical past, as well as gave rebirth to a new creative era. A new era that brought forth the ideas of humanism and Neo-Platonism, as well as new techniques in the fields of art and literature. However, the question is, how did all these new ideas and inventions spread throughout the world?

The renaissance period relished the human body and the talents of a person: humanism, a view where humans are the main importance, inspired many renaissance artists. The word renaissance means “rebirth”, for much of its works, such as art were based off of the works of the past. The Greeks and the Romans cherished the human body and intellect: almost all of the work from that time period focused on the ideal human body and the intellectual ability of man. Great artists and sculptors from Greece and Rome created perfect human bodies, while architects, great thinkers and mathematicians, developed ways to build structures, such as arches, in both ascetically and mathematically pleasing manners. Humans of the renaissance revitalized idealism and humanism; however, they diverged from the “middle ages”, where most art focused on non-human subjects, for the people depicted were mostly unrealistic, without perspective or any dimensions.
Since the dawn of civilization, there has been a constant struggle to find who or what is the focus of the universe. After Italy’s dark age, it became clear to most people at the time that when the Renaissance era began, the classics were revived and soon after, the appreciation of man began to develop. This was known as Humanism. Humanism can be described as the main intellectual component of the Renaissance. During the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, the Classics allowed artists to begin to incorporate the Greek and Roman, or Latin, characteristics into their art. While Humanism began spreading across Italy, the people of this time began to see that the ultimate value should not be measured in humility, but in talent and accomplishment.
