The study, “Remembering and Knowing” by Ednel Tulving has created after observations he had found about the way we know and remember things. His thesis is “Remembering one’s past is a different and perhaps more advanced achievement of the brain than simply knowing about it” (cite). His study presents some information worth considering however, there is a need for further studies and explanations for results that did not correspond in the study. If Tulving decides to take another step with this study, he should consider why some of findings were different than the ones he presented.
The thesis of this study is clearly indicated though it is should be more specific. It is evident that the thesis is well constructed and thought out. He gives his argument and supports it throughout the paper with two main arguments.
There are two arguments present that support the thesis. The first argument is about an amnesic patient, K.C., that cannot remember personal memories also referred to as episodic memory but knows a lot of facts also referred to as semantic memory(cite). The other argument shows that different parts of your brain are activated when you use the semantic and the episodic memory(cite). These arguments support the thesis that a personal past is different than knowing.
The researcher concludes that, “traditionally held views about the unity of memory are no longer tenable” (cite). He also concludes that “A more appropriate view seems to be that of multiple memory systems semantic and episodic” (Cite). Readers may choose to support or deny this study all based on how one interprets the information provided.

To conclude, this study provides information worth considering for further research. Information on how we perceive the way we are is always being altered to lead to better theories, this study may give us grounds for new findings. This study was good as a primary research into the matter however, it tends to exaggerate the findings and needs to be revised to provide a more powerful theory. The next step for this study should be improve it by revising it and answering questions as to why there is only one subject that has lost their episodic memory and answers as to why some people’s blood flow is different when thinking about episodic and semantic memory.
