Spirituality asks questions like how should I live and how do I connect with my higher power, it is where carnality and the cosmos collide, while religion asks what is right and wrong and what rituals should I follow, religion looks for what is true or false. Religion can be defined as an organized collection of beliefs and world views as they relate to humanity, it can contain cultural influences as well. Aslan says this about it, “Religion, it must be understood, is not faith. Religion is the story of faith” (Aslan p xxiii). In every monotheistic religion’s story of faith is God, no matter what name we call Him by, and intermingling details that tie us all together with the end result being love and charity. We have to open our minds and understand that just as we defend everything we love, so does everyone else in the world. The Humanities teach us that no matter where in the universe you are from, there are basic desires or needs that we all have in common; to feel like we belong, a sense of achievement, the ability to contribute, and a sense of independence, so on a basic level we are all the same. I would never allow someone to bash the religion I love, as a Christian we say, “For God I live and for God I’ll die”, that doesn’t mean that we will go out on a suicide mission, that is the culture of a group of people. They have placed a different value on the Islam that they identify with and they may be among the few who interpret the Quran literally, I don’t know, but what I do know is that extremist does not equate to passion. The vast majority of Islam is as passionate about the religion they believe in as the rest of the world is and they have that right. We have to understand that whether or not we agree with what a person does or how they live, we still have to respect their right to
