The Value of Religion In the essay, “Is Religion Bad or Good?” John Stahl reveals his thoughts on how religion is not necessarily good even though it is supposed to be. He points out five different religions including Judaism, Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, and Quaker as he gathers his opinion on each. Stahl lets it be known that no religion is really bad, yet they all have their own errors. He stops to say that in his opinion, “both Jews and Moslems should evolve their religious beliefs,” and that his reasons for this is that it is a solution to the warfare in the Middle East. He observes that the “perfect” religion consists of a single God for all, but that it leads to peace, joy, and love at the middle. Stahl, in the end, observes, “It really doesn’t matter whether it is your shoes or your hat that you take off (or put on) when you go to commune with God,” which I find extremely powerful. Basically what he is stating here is that God does not look for flaws on that outside, does not judge, and that all a God needs is you to know it is there and for you to believe it. Religion is always beneficial. I also feel the value of religion is quite significant to every person as an individual. Along with that, I believe every religion is the same as long as you have a God or higher power to believe in and to help teach moral values. Stahl mentions, “Religion is the root of all evil,” thinking it causes majority of warfare while I feel the exact opposite. I believe it is good to have a belief of something bigger than you to be there encouraging you to do what is good, what is right. For example, my younger brother, Ashton, and I have gone to church ever since we were little. My family ended up adopting my youngest ... ... middle of paper ... ...believe in, in order to make a right decision. You can just as easily know in your conscience that what you are doing is wrong, but I am just claiming that it gives you an incentive when you think that someone or something might be disappointed with you if you go on doing so. In conclusion, religion is not a bad thing; in truth it can be remarkably beneficial. Religion brings a base of encouragement to do the right thing and make good decisions. Also with religion comes a sense of comfort knowing that there is always someone or something there that you will always be able to rely on no matter the circumstances. It is always to know that someone or something else believes in you when no one, not even you can believe in yourself. Therefore, religion brings benefits. Throughout the course of history, man has looked to religion for answers. Curiosity as to how we got here and why we are have driven people to seek out answers to these somewhat unanswerable questions. Over the past few thousand years, several varying religions have been established, some more prominent than others. Many of them share a similar story of a divine creator who has always been and will always be. In the case of Christianity, whether true or not, it has proven to be beneficial to society as a whole. The Bible set the standard for the moral compass that humans live their lives by to this day. The key fundamental problem with religion, although not the fault of religion, is that man has often used it as a gateway to power and prominence. In the case of the 18th century Gallican church, the French were abusing their religious powers, thus creating vast inequality throughout France, which eventually led to a rebellion against the church, and the eventual destruction of the church within France.
Religion brings hope and duty, the promise of salvation and its believers follow for those reasons along with many others. Throughout the world you see many differences in religion and the rules they are based upon; in our book they are separated between eastern and western religions, each with their own fundamental background and basis. Religion gives people a higher power to believe in that they are protected if they follow the will of their gods. The differences seen are major division between religions but their similarities are what make the common ground for religion possible and the ties that hold our societies
People need religion because it gives there lives purpose. A religion gives its followers meaning for their lives, something that the lost souls of our modern world are otherwise lacking. Buddhism allows people to be completely independent of any laws other than the ones they create for themselves. Thus taking away from the mundane and constricting aspects that many religions relate too. Religion can provide many great things that are beneficial to society. One great thing Buddhism provides to its followers is a sense of fulfillment within ones self. Offering many great techniques that involve meditation that have been proven to release immense amounts of stress. On famous Buddhism center in the UK says that “The reason the mind needs to be this strong and this focused is so that the meditator can fully develop a number of social skills and intellectual understandings that will propel her along the path to enlightenment .” - Jaymang Buddhist Center. Even though Buddhism is a less popular religion, Buddhism is the future of American society because Buddhism offers a less constricting option and a major stress relief to its followers.
People are constantly trying to make their lives easier. Darwin theorized that this was part of "Survival of the Fittest." That the easier we make our lives, the more like we are to survive. Religion is one more way, along with self-starting coffee pots, that we have developed to make our lives easier and ultimately more bearable. Assuming that there is some "master plan" that we can't see makes. Religion is simply a self-made, self-serving idea.
As far as I am concerned, having a faith or becoming a believer in any religion is nothing like picking up the merchandise you want and making the most of it at all; it might sound ridiculous of what I just said, and people might say, “Religion, of course, is not a product.” But really, how many people consciously realize the process of themselves becoming a follower for a certain religion? And why do people eventually end up being a member of a certain religion not others?
Religion has played a big part in our society today and will continue its role for many generations to follow. It is religion that provides us with moral and ethical senses. Once again we must seek their guidance.
However, religion can and does play a meaningful role in many lives. A great number of individuals lead a morally good life precisely because of their religious commitments. A deeply ingrained personal faith can provide one with the strength to face hardship and overcome adversity. Hope thrives for those who believe an in an omniscient and all-powerful God, but God and religion are form a necessity to act righteously. Believers and nonbelievers need to work together to live up to the highest moral standards for society to survive as a whole.
Religion influences social relationships in more ways then one. Religion for many is a way of life, a lifestyle. You learn values and discipline and its something that is constantly around. Religion can promote helping and thinking (Aronson, E., Wilson, T.D., &Akert, R.M. ,2013).
This asks the question of whether religion is really needed. The point is, there are numerous religions currently, and all insist to be the only true religion. Thus if religion is needed, which among the religious groups is really needed. Nevertheless, since religion is embedded in the social system, it provides guidelines for conducts which are conveyed in an array of norms, example the ten Commandments in some Christian and Jewish societies. Most human cultures are directed and controlled by norms provided in their society. Religion thus, reinforces social norms and values. It promotes social accord at where it is practised. It maintains social solidity by relieving tensions that could unsettle social order. It also helps deal with situations of emotional stress that imperil the stability of society. For example, the way society deals with death of a beloved - the bereaved person is comforted by relatives through a methodology established by a
Religion should not make people feel as if they are forced to live a certain way, but it should be used as a way of thinking/deciding between right and wrong. No one is perfect and no one knows everything. That is why with religion, we are able to understand more than what is known. How does religion, work? “Starting with magic and religion, which views the world simply as an extension of the human mind, we eventually reach the age of science, in which we view the world as being ruled by universal laws” (Grey 1). This explains how and why science can easily replace religion. Religion for many people is a great support system for the disadvantaged, especially for those who are going through a lot in life. Not only that, but when people are
Religion is the main source of morals and values today. I feel like many people today are not following the word of God. I think that religion is overlooked, and not taught enough. For example, colleges, high schools, and many other places are not even allowed to pray, teach or preach the word of the bible. I feel like that is a problem in the United States today. It has had the effect of more violence, problems in families, and the non- education of the younger generation. I feel that though religion is choice, it should be introduced, because many don't even get the opportunity to learn about it.
Religion can also promote the credo of what you can do is to do the right thing. This is what purpose and belief in religion is all about. Religious people also believe that God will fix everything out in the end, so people can then have the potential of having less stress and be lead to adequate health, regardless of which type of religion you are involved in. If a religion has some form of teachings then a strong belief will make the believer more likely to live that way. As a result, religious people are likely to do good things, such as volunteer work, because that fits the image of followers’ higher and holy power. The elements, finding self-esteem, doing the right things, less stress, and volunteer work, mentioned above are all positive effects that religionists could display, as a result of being involved in a religious
Religion has screwed us up for a long time and we'd be better off without it. By "us" I mean Americans living in the 21st century. Without religions we would have fewer labels separating us from each other and we wouldn't hate Jews or Catholics or Muslims. If we didn't have religions, we wouldn't have to convert anyone or "save" anyone. If we didn't have religions, people could no longer get caught up in the fine lines of religious rightousness or be trapped in a double-standard morality. And most importantly, we would be truly free of religious engendered guilt that never quite goes away.
Religion is an interesting word. It has eight letters, three syllables, and countless meanings. If you asked twenty people what their definition of religion is, you would get twenty very different responses. Religion has an impact on your principles, your morals, and how you react to others. Everyone has their own way of practicing, sharing, and learning about their religion. It affects everyone of us everyday and is quite possibly the most important topic in our social lives.
Throughout society today, religion and spirituality are greatly prominent and its importance of its role is no exception. Religion is a vital aspect of life for many people around the world. Perhaps some of those who are not religious thinks that it is important. This may be due to the fact that society needs religion. Collectively, we profit from our religious beliefs. Many could argue that religion would be a missing link in society and we would not function without it. Religion promotes critical virtues in which are important in society such as truth, love, non-violence and discipline. Those who follow a religion internalises these virtues
