In an essay of 750 words explain the relevance of autocratic,democratic and laissez faire leadership styles to the effective running of an organisation.
Strong leadership is key to be able to establish performance direction and leadership success. Different situations need different leadership or management styles to help them achieve their target. The main difference between leaders and managers is that leaders have people who follow them while managers have people who work for them. I will now explain the relevance of 3 separate leadership styles and how each one affects the running of an organisation.
To be an efficient and successful leader, the leader must asses the situation they are in and be able to decide which leadership style would benefit the organisation that they are running. There are 3 particular leadership styles which have all been proven effective in various ways. A few factors what would apply to all leadership styles could be things such as motivation,strength and ambition. If an organisation lacks any of these things the group members would be unenthusiastic and the organisation would be non successful. An effective leader must have
Laissez faire is known as a hands off leadership approach where workers have little direction and guidance from there leader. The staff are given total authority and independence and are trusted to make decisions on their own. This leadership style would be most effective when staff are highly skilled or educated and they can be left to do the job at there own pace. This provides positive effects on job satisfaction for the workers. Although workers satisfaction may go up and workers may be experienced, some are just not capable of working on there own. Lack of guidance from the leader could leave workers feeling like the leader is not concerned about the task there fore they express less care for the task
STYLES OF LEADERSHIP An autocratic leadership style is one where the manager sets objectives, allocates tasks, and insists on obedience. Therefore the group becomes dependent on him or her. The result of this style is the members of the group are often dissatisfied with the leader. This results in little cohesion, the need for high levels of supervision, and poor levels of motivation amongst employees. A democratic leadership style encourages participation in decision making.
In order to be able to understand what makes an effective leader, it is first essential to understand what leadership is. There are many varying perceptions about the concept of leadership. Different types of leadership focus on different principles that range from the character traits of the leader to the change the leader brings. You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make him drink is a proverb I have heard since I was young. Leadership is the skill of influencing people to accomplish goals (Huber, 2014). In today’s world with policy and technological changes the leaders must use their leadership skills to not only get the horse to the water, have him drink, but also do it with a smile an invite others to join him. Leaders use a variety of styles to accomplish their goals. I will discuss the leadership style that I utilize most often, how my style relates to leadership theories and the work type environment it is most useful in.
Ineffective leaders consider incentives/profit/status quo before its people. Too much objectivity of a leader puts all his subordinates at pressure to reach a particular expectation such as quota and minimum expectations. Ineffective leaders are too much technical in delineating their works without considering employee satisfaction to his/her work.
This style has been defined as ( Abdicates responsibilities avoid making decisions)(Robbins 2001). That would mean leaders are not involved in taking decisions at all and they are available only to provide their employees with materials and answering questions, the subordinates have complete freedom to take decisions and set objectives (Chaudhry and Husnain 2012). In other words, this theory lacks any kind on powerful leadership. Hence, there would be lack of motivation, low levels of performance, and poor work practices(Packard 2009). However, if the employees are already motivated and have full understanding and high level of knowledge regarding the mission at hand, Lassies- Faire model might works fine (Gustainis and Roosevelt 2004) .
The idea of what’s morally right and wrong changes within each culture whether an organizational culture or between individuals. However, the best leaders are the ones who do what’s right and best for the organization. During this research paper I will attempt to define the term leadership style and its concept. Moreover, I will attempt to describe three leadership styles, the development and the process one would follow to modify their leadership style. When pertaining to myself, I never saw myself as a leader but I will attempt to describe my leadership style and the advantages and disadvantage I would have in a business environment.
Continuously, there is the affiliative style which means that a leader creates a positive harmony for his employees (Six leadership styles: selecting the right leader, 2016). In other words, that leader put people first and tasks second. The Democratic leader focuses on the decision making, also, the employees in this organisation have the skills, knowledge require. Presently many of us have learned that managers are primarily administrators who have learned to write business plans, utilize their resources and keep track of progress. We must learn that we are not limited by job title, and that means we can utilize our management skills in any position that we are in. We must also know that we can use our leadership skills in the same situations. On the other hand we have also learned that leaders are people who have an impact on those that surround them. The main difference that separates these two roles is that management is a function that must be utilized in any type of business, and leadership is the relationship that the leader has with his followers, which in turn can motivate and energize the organization.
Autocratic leadership theory is a part of the behavioural approach. In this leadership theory, leader makes all decisions and uses power to command and control the followers to achieve goal. According to Lewin(1939), “autocratic leaders are associated with high-performing groups, but that close supervision is necessary and feeling of hostility are often present” (p.173). It is incredibly efficient and tasks are completed quickly. Autocratic leadership can be beneficial when decisions need to be making quickly. For example, in emergency situation surgeon uses this theory because the patient’s situation is between life and death and there is no time to discuss with other members. Bass (2008) mentioned in the Leadership styles and theories article, “Autocratic leaders can be effective because they create good structure, and determine what needs to be done. They provide rewards for compliance, but punish disobedience” (Giltinane, 2013, p. 35-37).
The method of leadership is almost as similar as management, and a leader can be a manager. “Both management and leadership are seen as positions of responsibility or accountability in an organization” (Edwards, Schedlitzki, Turnbull, & Gill, 2015). Leadership and management can relate and overlap within the roles and functions and are similar within one another in meaning. Together leadership and management direct the actions of a group or individually.
Some people believe leadership and management are one in the same; however, this is not true because management involves planning, staffing, directing and controlling and, a manager is a person who performs these functions (Leadership Theories and Studies, 2009). The term manager is a formal title given to a person who has authority by virtue of his or her position or office. (Leadership Theories and Studies, 2009) Leadership, by contrast, is about influence; leaders use factors other than just their formal authority to influence subordinates. There are three major leadership theories developed from the 1930s to the 1970s which attempt to explain why some leaders are better than others, these theories are: trait leadership (1930s and 1940s), behavior leadership (1940s and 1950s), and contingency leadership (1960s and 1970s).
There are so many aspects to being an effective leader, yet they are so easy to achieve but some leaders do not care to. Effective leaders must motivate, value their employees, solve problems, and be accountable. An effective leader is said to know the organization, the purpose,
Laissez faire leadership differs quite a bit from the traditional leadership styles. As mentioned above, the style requires quite a bit less leadership than many other styles, as the leader’s role is rather diminished. Nonetheless, the hands-off approach doesn’t mean that the framework is non-existent or irrelevant. In fact, for laissez faire to work properly and effectively, emphasis must be place on creating the right conditions for employees to flourish.
Leadership and management are two fundamental concepts which are involved in the effective management of organizations. Leadership in my opinion is a complex concept, which includes association of human qualities and the result of their activities. To be a great leader means not only following own visions, but also work towards company’s goals.
In this paper I will look at the four major leadership styles, their characteristics, advantages, disadvantages, and in what situations a particular leadership style is desired. Additionally, I will look at my leadership style and how I acquired this style throughout my career.
