In a time of national healthcare reform and financial uncertainty it is imperative that healthcare leaders use resources effectively by investing in human capital management to reduce costs and increase the quality and safety of patient care to prevent ‘never events,” such as pressure ulcers, surgical site infections, vascular-catheter associated infection, catheter-associated urinary tract infection, administration of incompatible blood, and falls (Institute of Medicine 2001). However, this requires the development of high performing teams that can deliver safe, effective, efficient, timely and equitable, patient-centered care.
Leaders are expected to lead and followers expected to follow- but are the two really that different? Not really. This paper focuses on the relationship between the healthcare leaders style of leadership behaviors and its’ effect on the followers’ willingness to follow. The premise for this paper is that a leader can only lead effectively if the follower is in alignment with the leader and willing to follow. I will show evidence to support the argument that followers effectively follow when leaders effectively lead indicating that the two are not mutually exclusive and that both are necessary for success.
Much is written about the role of leadership in achieving this, but followership can also contribute to improving quality and safety. Followership, defined as ‘upward influence’, describes individuals’ behaviors and contribution to their teams that affect outcomes. It’s the process of being guided by a leader in the workplace. Each of us has a choice as to what type of follower we will be. No matter what your job title is-- you follow someone. The role of the follower is absolutely vital to the success of the organization. The truth is we are leaders and followers at the same time. Like I’ve always said-“I know how to lead, but also how to be led.” Life is a dance you learn as you go; sometimes you lead, sometimes you follow. A question to ask oneself would be: Is it possible that great leadership is born out of great followership?
