Society 's attitude towards police has been a topic of research and discussion for many years. Studies conducted on the relationship between police officers and society have revolved around the differences of race, gender, and age. Specifically, some of these studies focused on who exactly had direct contact and experiences with the police. Relatively unstudied, however, have been issues of how social media impacts the public 's perception of crime and attitudes towards police. As we continue to analyze different ways the perspective of police is affected, it is important to analyze the media 's and society 's satisfaction with law enforcement, and its contribution to the way people perceive, feel, and relate to police. As Edwards (9) writes, “Most people getting their information and perceptions about crime and the criminal justice system through various media outlets […] however, do not always receive an accurate view of reality.” Depending on how much exposure, attention, and drama the media incorporates to their news reports will be the toddling factor of the public 's response. As an example, when related to the rise in the tragic occurrences of school shootings over the past fifteen to twenty years, ¨The media attention given to school shootings seemed to result in a widespread panic, where actual statistics and logical assessments of the threat were replaced by emotionally charged reactions to these isolated incidents¨ (Burns & Crawford, 1999).
