Intimacy and friendship both help preserve ones physical and mental well-being. Friendship is the foundation for which a strong love relationship develops. When individuals become friends they share interests, values, trust, understanding, and enjoyment and this is the root from which love grows. The difference between the intimacy of friendship and love is that they each satisfy different needs. Romantic partners satisfy emotional support, money, sexual activity, and shared legal statues, whereas friends provide only emotional support.

Love is important because it satisfies the emotional needs of every human being and it’s essential to our lives. Love is what binds us together as families, friends, and partners. It’s the emotion that allows us to attach and show affection to another human being. Love allows us to overcome obstacles in life and helps us through the difficult times and it’s the emotion that allows humans to treat each other with kindness, respect, and compassion.

Romantic love in American families is quite different than other cultures. Marriages in the United States were never formally arranged as they are in other parts of the world. Parents had control during the 18th century, but by the 19th century parental involvement in their children’s marriage choices had diminished. By the 20th century companionate marriage became popular where spouses where to be each other’s best friends, confidants, and romantic partners. This became the foundation on which marriage was to be built on and the criteria by which spouses were to be chosen. Choosing a spouse based only on romantic love has consequences, and may lead to a tendency to idealize the partner, display affection toward the partner, and attach more importance ...

Expressing love through displays of affection, sexual desire, and sexual activity are way couples can express their love for one another. There is the assumption that being in love must include sexual desire and that if a relationship lacks sexual desire they are believed to be not in love. Sex includes intimacy and caring, and these are key aspects of love. According to the text, men and women who feel the greatest sexual desire for dating partners are also likely to report the strongest of passionate love. However, sexual activity is not the only way partners can display their love for one another. Displays of affections such as, holding hands, being out together, telling others that we are a couple, and meeting our partner 's parents are ways couples can also display affection.
