The research process for this essay was complicated and agonizing. I had no idea where to start. As a class, we went to the library and learned how to look up good peer reviewed articles that were reliable sources for our essay. This helped a little, until I had to do it on my own. When I first started looking up different articles based on my topic, I got many articles returned, too many to read through in a short amount of time. The key to narrowing down the amount of articles was to use better key words when I was searching for articles. At first, I was using general key words like obesity and fast food, as those went along with my essay they brought up many articles and none that really interested me enough to read or use in my essay. I started looking up articles the weekend after fall break. I went to the search engine that Jenny Dale showed us in class the Wednesday before fall break. I knew that in order for me to get good reliable sourced articles I would have to use very specific keywords. I looked at my outline for my paper and went paragraph by paragraph. The first paragraph that I actually needed information from would be my fourth paragraph. I knew I wanted to talk about the rate of obesity in America and how it related to income. In the search bar I searched for obesity rates and pressed the scholarly article button to insure I got a peer reviewed article. I scrolled through the different article that came up and Perez Rodrigo article came up about the current mapping of obesity. I clicked on the article, read the summary of it, and realize it was just what I was looking for and decide to use. For the next couple of paragraphs I wanted to compare the location of fast food restaurants in relation to lower incom... ... middle of paper ... ...ut my argument using both point of views and it was also a peer reviewed article. Some challenges I faced was learning how to search for keywords and trying to narrow down the number of articles that were returned. In addition, another challenge was digging through the articles that were return and choosing the articles that worked best and that were in English. Some surprise were about how much calories are in the different meals and how there are so many fast food places and not many healthy food places on a street corner. A dead end I reached was trying to figure out how to use each article thoroughly and how to incorporate it into my paper. Overall, I am glad we got the chance to talk to Jenny Dale from the library because otherwise I do not know how I would of went about my research process or even found any articles that I needed and that were good to use.
When I discovered that my English class had to do a Research Paper, I became horrified. I thought students only did this when they were finishing graduate school not when they were starting their first year in college. All I knew about research papers was that there is an overwhelming amount of research to do. In my efforts to complete this obstacle and not bore myself to sleep with researching, I wanted to do an interesting topic, but I had no idea where to begin. I spent hours going through a great number of subjects and people, but once I found topic remotely interesting, I could not find much information on the Library of Congress website. Therefore, I decided to choose one word that would hopefully lead me to an interesting topic. I set my search limits to manuscripts and searched the word murder. The article by Antonella Arhin that I analyzed shows how to take my general topic (diets and their effects on the Caribbean diaspora and indigenous people) and helped narrow it down to a specific question (the health issues that this can cause i.e. Diabetes). This will assist in coming up with more concise research methods and ways to arrive at these answers. By having a detailed, concise research question it will help me with explaining the significance, as well as the approach that I take and the audience that I plan on targeting. As said previously I believe if I can reach a wider audience especially individuals from all walks of life it will help with them really paying attention to the types of food and also the amount that is consumed. One out of every three Americans is obese and the majority of these obese people in the United States have eaten regularly at fast food restaurants. As the obesity rate increases, the number of fast food restaurants goes up as well. Although it is not certain, many believe that obesity in the United States is correlated to eating fast food. Since the United States has the highest obesity rate out of any country, it is important for Americans to monitor the fast food industry that may be causing obesity. With the pressure to get things done in a timely manner, fast food became a big necessity. However, when creating fast food restaurants, the industries were not thinking about the negative effects such as obesity. Other than obesity, other harmful effects exist as well. Fast food restaurants serve unhealthy products such as greasy foods and artificial meat that lead to dietary health issues in many adults and children. A recent study showed that “Young children who are fed processed, nutrient-poor foods are likely to become unhealthy teenagers, and eventually unhealthy adults. Now twenty-three percent of teens in the U.S. are pre-diabetic or diabetic, 22% have high or borderline high LDL cholesterol levels, and 14% have hypertension or prehypertension” (May, Kuklina, Yoon). The food that they provide is made to be eaten quickly, causing problems for the digestive system. Also, the health problems lead to the use for health insurance, which adds to the costs of Medicare. Health care costs will only worsen an already failing economy. Therefore, the government should regulate fast food restaurants in the United States in order to repair the deteriorating health and economy in America.
- Unfortunatly, all research papers have a limitation to their studies. Some of the limits I may come across is, lack of information, lack of respectable and trusted articles or books. These two will be my biggest concern when writing this paper. The way I plan to try and overcome this obstacle is by gathering all the information I have before hand, and understand the limitations I may occur before I begin writing my paper. This way, I will know my limits while writing my paper and not overstep my boundaries.
Obesity has become an epidemic in today’s society. Today around 50% of America is now considered to be over weight. Fast-food consumption has been a major contributor to the debate of the twenty-first century. Chapter thirteen, titled “Is Fast-Food the New Tobacco,” in the They Say I Say book, consists of authors discussing the debate of fast-food’s link to obesity. Authors debate the government’s effects on the fast-food industry, along with whether or not the fast-food industry is to blame for the rise in obesity throughout America. While some people blame the fast food industry for the rise in obesity, others believe it is a matter of personal responsibility to watch what someone eats and make sure they get the proper exercise.
This journal was unbiased and took a scientific approach to the topic. However, it does not go very far beyond stating the details of the study, and due to a lack of a counterargument I would not consider it an all-encompassing overview of the subject. However, the information is presented with a neutral and formal tone. I would consider this a reliable source.
I started my research by logging into the Ebsco database. Young, teacher, and stress were the keywords I first used. These keywords were included in 16 results. I found one article within these 16 results, so I expanded my search by excluding the word young. After I expanded my search there were 2,806 results. I read through some of them and decided if I felt they should be included in my paper. I found one article that had statics that I thought could greatly benefit my paper. After I finished locating sources on Ebsco, I started my search on the ProQuest database. I began by searching for stress in young teachers. This search brought up 73,016 results. In the article, “How to Read and Understand Scientific Research,” the author Chris Kresser explains different kinds of scientific research, how to find the research papers and ways to get a good understanding of the papers. Scientific research can be largely classified into two types- original research and review papers. Original research is established on the researcher’s own conclusions through experimental or observational studies. Whereas, a review paper is built upon others’ research works published previously, with a different perspective on the conclusion. In the book Fast Food Nation, Eric Schlosser writes about the fast food industry. Schlosser tells the story of J.R. Simplot, the man behind McDonald’s source for potatoes. He started his own business right out of the eighth grade, after dropping out. He started out small but eventually became one of the riches men in America. He owned then 160 acres of land to start off this business. He sold his potatoes to companies at first all natural. But he soon discovered that if you dry out the food it will keep for longer, more companies then bought from him. Then in the 1950's he found out about freezing them, and the method of frozen food. McDonald’s started buying and selling Simplot fries. The customers seemed to like it, they didn't mind the change or even realize it. As a result though from freezing the potatoes, they lost a lot of the natural flavors. Companies began cooking their food in a high percentage of animal fat to capture that flavor, but soon they switched. They traded beef fat for more chemicals. The fries flavor all depends on the chemicals, it is all fake, and there is even more saturated fat from their fries than in their burgers.
With the continued growth of fast food restaurants, low priced food, and fast friendly service, these restaurants have become very appealing to the average consumer. With this increase in popularity, there has come many problems for these companies associated with the fast food industry. These stores are being blamed for the rise of obesity and other health issues in America; leading to many wanting a ban or probation on these fast food restaurants. The Government has stepped in on this issue and is trying to coming up with solutions for this so called “epidemic”. “One ordinance has passed by the Los Angeles City Council that bans the issuance of permits relating to the construction of any new fast food restaurants in South Los Angeles, California to promote healthy eating choices” (Creighton, 2009, p. 249). This law stops fast food restaurants from building any new stores in South Los Angeles. This law tells people that the “government is better at making choices for people than the people are for themselves” (Creighton, 2009, p. 249). It is like the government is treating their citizens like children making decisions for them, because they do not know better. Fast food restaurants should not be blamed for the consumers’ health problems, because it is the consumers’ choice to eat there, and these restaurants are not as bad as anti-fast food activists make them out to be.
My search process for the I Search was relatively easy and simple. The steps in finding useful resources and information were using key words to Google my topic and then finding whether or not the source is credible. After verifying that I could use the website, I read the entire article before going back and picking out captions to paraphrase and take notes on. Over the time of my research, my questions changed repeatedly in order to match the research and information I found. At the beginning of my process, I had trouble finding information the matched my questions, once I changed my questions to fit my research instead of the other way around. After fixing my thick and thin questions, my research was extremely easy to find and use. It has become common today to dismiss the topic of obesity due to the fast food diets. In discussions about obesity, one controversial issue has been the effect fast food restaurants have on health. Before I began to do my search process, I made a list and wrote down the things I knew, and certain keywords I could use to find my information. Some of my keywords were, how has technology made cosmetology better, how has technology changed the industry, advances in cosmetology with their equipment and cosmetics, new advanced and enhanced things for cosmetology in 2016- 2017, and if they are making an effect on society. Finding my sources for my research paper wasn't a difficult process for me. I began by typing the question, “new technology in the beauty industry” in the Google search bar. I had a lot of different sources appear, that allowed me to have variety of sources that I needed for my paper.
Fast Food and Obesity In the last century, advancements in medical treatments have made many diseases that were practically a death sentence in the past curable. However, there is currently an epidemic of a different sort: obesity. The image problem doesn’t help. After all, most would associate being fat with Santa Claus before associating it with disability and death (Duncan 1).
Is fast food to blame for the growing obesity in America? Obesity affects more than half of the population. With so many Americans gaining weight and so many health problems the matter has to be addressed. There is no one would argue that obesity, especially the children is considered a problem. In any case the cause of childhood obesity is fought about daily. Many people will say that fast food restaurants are to blame. In my research, I will explain the argument that who is to blame for the obesity in America: fast food restaurants or common laziness from the obese society.
