Motivation is important because it allows you to work towards and complete your goals. GPA allows you to see, on average, how well a student has performed in all classes they have taken. It is likely there is a relationship between motivation and GPA. If a student is highly motivated, will their GPA rise? Based upon previous research, it is hypothesized that students who are highly motivated will have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Seventeen university students, 9 male and 8 female participated in the survey. The survey included 9 questions that measured motivation, measured on a Likert scale from 1-5. [Results].
Students may see the results and decide to change their study habits. One application for the real world could be software that helps raise a students GPA. A software developer might use the results from this study to better understand how motivation influences GPA.
Intro(will change to title)
People become motivated because they want to succeed at what they are doing. Without motivation, you would never be productive or get anything done. Motivation is important because it allows you to work towards and complete your goals. University students are likely to be very motivated. One motivating factor for students is the prospect of getting a good job upon graduation. Doing good in a University means getting a high grade point average (GPA). GPA allows you to see, on average, how well a student has performed in all classes they have taken. GPA can be seen as a result of student success, and motivation can be seen as a key factor to student success. Because of this, it is likely there is a relationship between motivation and GPA. So, if a student is highly motivated, will their GPA rise?

GPA. The survey included one question relating to a high or low GPA. The participants were asked whether they had a (high) GPA of 3.0 or higher, or a (low) GPA lower than 3.0.

Grades do motivate students to do better but, grades cause students to want to get a good grade instead of fully mastering the material. They look at school just trying to pass which promotes cheating on tests and homework. They also will choose the material that is the easiest and choose a class with a professor who doesn’t care to raise their GPA. School is supposed to be about learning and understanding new material to help gain knowledge and a new way of thinking.
While no significant gains were noted in the area of student motivation, additional research in this area is needed to determine if specific motivational factors would contribute to an increase in motivation.

The school council should raise the GPA requirement because it develops good work habits. These work habits can be develop by studying for a test, doing the assigned homework, or taking good notes. Students who develop good work habits, such as responsibility and efficiency, will get a better job position more than students without the work habits. Students with good work habits know that they are fulfill the expectations of themselves placed by teachers and parents. Even though students are under pressure at one point, their work habits let them progress more easily in life. With good habits and high...
At this point, let me state the obvious: Studying motivation is somewhat difficult, because motivation is subjective. Motivation is not directly observable. It must be inferred from student behavior. Also, behavior patterns exhibited by students may have similar surface attributes, but could arise from entirely different motivations (Good, Brophy, 1995).
People with self-control and motivation learn more effectively in the long run. In Paul Tough's book; How Children Succeed, he discussed various factors that contribute to success which included Self-Control and Motivation. Many could argue that self-control and motivation don’t make a difference academically, but on the contrary; both are good tools to utilize in an educational capacity. One needs self-control to focus on studying rather than hanging out with their friends. Self-control can be the difference between failing or succeeding in college. Often times you see motivation and self-control work hand in hand. Motivation can be a helpful technique to use in the learning process. Self-control and motivation when used in a learning environment can be highly effective in the outcome of success.
Thus the reason for research in determining what factors contribute to high attrition rates at the post-secondary level as well as developing intervention programs that can identify students who may be at-risk of dropping out. Hsieh's (2007) examined student motivation towards learning which hypothesized that two factors can influence a student's possibility of dropping out: self efficacy and goal orientation. While this study focuses on these factors, Alarcon (2013) states that previous theories are limited because they neglect trait aspects of retention. He suggests that there are two traits to consider: ability and motivation with special attention as to how they are assessed. To assess these, Alarcon used standardized tests as a measure of ability and c...
For their entire lives, these students have been motivated by an outside source to complete their work. Whether it was a teacher, parent, or tutor, students were constantly reminded of the importance of completing their assignments. As college students, however, there is a need for a greater sense of self-motivation. These students have not yet developed the maturity necessary to thrive in an independent learning environment. Many students go into college without the discipline and determination needed in order to succeed. These students struggle throughout their college beginnings and become discouraged at their poor performance compared to their previous high school successes. Other times, students are caught up in the “college experience,” and begin to lose motivation. College’s social aspect is a lifelong memory. Many students, however, prioritize socializing and partying over their studies. It is a slippery slope for these students as coursework and other assignments pile up and eventually overwhelm the naive
I have learned a lot about high school from upper clasmen and my teachers. Now that I have learned that you need to keep your GPA up starting from your freshman year, I am going to strive for all A’s in all my classes because I want to be number one of the Roanoke Valley Early College Class of 2019. Also I want to go to East Carolina University and I need higher than a 2.5 GPA I should try to strive for the best. Even though 2.5 is the lowest GPA that East Carolina University will accept the seniors and teachers of Roanoke Valley Early College taught me to aim higher than a 2.5 GPA.
It’s that time of year again. Students all over the country are rushing to get their college applications in. They hope for the best and try not to expect the worst. Students are impelled to bring up their GPA so that the admissions office of the undergraduate program they aspire to get in, may take a second look at their application. These students aspiration is that their first choice university will pick them. Their theory, a well proven one at that, is that the better your test scores and GPA are, the better of a chance you have to be admitted. This research paper compares two of the best colleges in the state of Indiana. Indiana State University in Bloomington (IU Bloomington), and Purdue University (Purdue). While some differences are
I have been proactively working to keep my GPA at a high mark while attending school and it has helped me along the way to read excerpts from Drive, by Daniel H. Pink. In his
“Motivation is a complex part of human psychology and behavior that influences how individuals choose to invest their time, how much energy they exert in any given task, how they think and feel about the task, and how long they persist at the task” (Urdan & Schoenfelder, 2006). The biggest question educators face in today’s classroom is what motivates a student to do something and why? Virtually all students are motivated in one way or another. Research of student motivation suggests a theory that emphasizes a social-cognitive perspective. The cognition of students regarding academic work are influenced by social factors, such as messages from the teacher about the difficulty of the task, the perceived abilities of classmates, and the information about the importance of learning the material (Urdan & Schoenfelder, 2006). In this paper the focus will primarily be on those elements within the classroom that influence student motivation and engagement.
Multiple theories have been developed to offer insight on a student’s motivation and its impact on their performance. The effectiveness of these theories in various student life scenarios vary as seen from differing applications. Therefore, it is difficult to pinpoint one particular theory as being the most effective. Motivation theories can be divided into three distinct categories that include: needs, process and reward systems theories. The needs category of motivation theory is frequently employed more than the others although this is arguable. There are different theories contained in the needs category which may differ in application although they all share a distinct similarity. The Herzberg’s two factor theory is the
Being motivated is not just about a good end result, but it is about acquiring an ingrained mindset that empowers and directs one’s behavior. (Tan, OS, Parsons, R. D., Hinson, S. L., & Sardo-Brown, D., 2011) Mary Doe can clearly be seen to be unmotivated in learning as seen from her low expectations of success. She is seen to have a low gauge of her ability, which leads to her low confidence, and lowered motivation towards her academics. We will explore the possible causes, as well as solutions to aid the improvement of her motivation in learning.
Many researches have been conducted to investigate what motivates students for better academic performance and whether it has a correlation with achievement motivation.
