Reflections on Intro To College Writing
Writing has always been essential to becoming the person I am today. I 've been writing sketch comedy and stand-up comedy for about six years, and recently I 've been working on writing music. I love writing because it is an umbrella term that covers a wide range of topics. I learned from this class many of the things that writing can accomplish. For example, in the first text I read, Nick Walker introduced the idea of a “neurodiversity paradigm shift.” I found this piece of text truly inspiring because it presented a minority that many people only passively consider. While reading in College Writing and even in my own leisure time I search for the author 's purpose and the reasoning as to why this text was composed. “Purposes take into account the emotions and possible actions of readers as well as their thoughts” (DK5). After taking this course, I have learned to consider who the audience is and write for them and not myself. For example, when writing my essay about autism, I needed to consider who my audience was, and that meant defining some of the more complicated concepts in order to make it easier for the reader to follow along. After learning these tactics I have become a better reader and writer and I can apply this to my future endeavors. While coming up with my own purpose for my interpretive essays, I had to find a way to make my essays relatable and understandable to everybody, and I did this by finding a connection and keeping it ethical. By doing that, I can appeal to the largest audience possible without alienating anybody.
Ethics is an incredibly crucial part of college writing that I never learned in high school, but taking this class has helped me realize just how important it is to be ethical. Ethics allows the audience to feel included, and that is crucial for keeping your readers interested in your work. Learning how to approach an essay ethically came up in my first conference with my teacher.
