When I was a freshman in college, I started my first semester with four basic classes, English, algebra, chemistry, and developmental psychology. Back then I did not see the significance of those classes other than the fact that I had to take them to meet general education requirements. I knew that the purpose of general education was to create a well-rounded student with a variety of skills and knowledge, but I did not understand why a nurse would need to know how to write a five page paper on the Arab Spring. Fast forward to my last semester of college and more importantly nursing school, where for the first time I am realizing how important those courses were for my nursing school career.

First of all, nursing courses require a lot of critical and strategic thinking skills. These courses are meant to teach us how to take care of patients with specific illnesses and we are also taught how to keep them safe while we care for them. I am referring to the legal, ethical, and safety practices that we are taught all throughout nursing school. I have been fortunate enough to witness quality safety practices throughout all my rotations, but that is not to say that the potential for a violation has not been present. The most recent example I can think of deals with safety practices with patients who are restrained. I have noticed the use restraints to be an option that can cause great distress if abused, but is quite frequently necessary in a unit such as the one I am currently on, which is the medical intensive care unit. Although it is concerning, many of the patients who have required restraints have been ones that are constantly pulling out tubing such as Foley catheters, nasogastric tubes, and IVs. At this point in my education, I have not attended a rotation where an incident report while filed, but I have come to learn that on units such as med-surg, common incident reports filed are about patient falls. General Education courses may be one of the most hated requirements in college by students. These courses are required amongst all college students regardless of one’s major or minor. General Education courses may vary with schools but usually consist of: the arts and humanities, social science, natural science, mathematics, and writing. These courses should be optional; students should be able to take them at their own interest such as with elective courses. Without General Education courses it is understood that students will not have completed or received credits needed to graduate. Required college courses should be based solely on one’s major or minor. Students should not be required to take general education courses for the simple fact that they are deemed “important”. General Education courses causes more money, unnecessary time spent taking classes that do not correlate with one’s major, and also lower grades. However, general education classes are said to be the basic skills needed for college students.
There are many times in life when a person has to adapt. At the beginning it’s the playground jungle and finding friends who like reading. Then it becomes high school with social rules and changing as a person grows. College is a significant part for a young adult but to challenge that growth is nursing school. Nursing school becomes a boot camp where tears are everywhere and everybody just wants to go home and take a bath. Safety is a primary concern in the health care environment, but there are still many preventable errors that occur. In fact, a study from ProPublica in 2013 found that between 210,000 and 440,000 patients each year suffer preventable harm in the hospital (Allen, 2013). Safety in the healthcare environment is not only keeping the patient safe, but also the employee. If a nurse does not follow procedure, they could bring harm to themselves, the patient, or both. As long as I can remember, my whole childhood I have known what I wanted a career in. I have always wanted to be some type of nurse, this influence came from my mother, who is a nurse and inspired me to also become one. In ACA I learned this still might be the right step for me. As we have went on in the semester we have learned what our personality type is and what are learning skills are revolved around. The following essay is a reflective paper on an event that I encountered as a student nurse during my first clinical placement in my first year of study. The event took place in a long term facility. This reflection is about the patient whom I will call Mrs. D. to protect her confidentiality. Throughout this essay I will be using LEARN model of reflection. I have decided to reflect on the event described in this essay since I believe that it highlights the need for nurses to have effective vital signs ‘assessment skills especially when treating older patients with complex medical diagnoses.

I am working as a staff nurse at one of the Integrated Management System (IMS) accredited hospital in Sarawak since 2014. I qualified as a Registered Nurse with a Diploma in Nursing in year 2007. My first year I have been working in a multi-disciplinary ward. We cover a range of specialties including minor and major surgeries. The health care team in my ward consists of 1 Unit Manager, 20 staff nurses and 15 care assistants.
During my Bachelor of Nursing Clinical placement, I encountered many clinical events however, there one particular event occurred during my first two weeks that will be discussed in this reflection using the Gibbs’ model of reflection. This was the first time conducting a full set of observations on a patient entirely at my own doing, with my preceptor supervising. The observation round began patient in bed, I proceeded to introduce myself as Annie a student nurse, then asked for consent and explained the procedure to the patient. Patient confirmed that it was okay for me to continue on to do her observations so I proceeded to start the observations with the supervision of my preceptor. The interdisciplinary course is a core requirement in the after-degree nursing program as it incorporates the principles of self-directed learning and promotes critical thinking, which is an essential element in nursing practice. As a final year nursing student, I believe that knowledge from this course will enhance my ability to provide patient-centered care.
