English writing is one of my weakest areas. I was born and raised in the United States, but English was not my first language which leads me to have a hard time writing essays in my classes. I did not get the resources that I need for my writing until I was in college. One of the areas that I struggle with is understands the writing prompt. If I do not understand the writing prompt, then I will have a hard time writing my paper. However, now, I am working on my writing skills to be better than before. In the Fall semester 2014, it was my first time writing a research paper that is based on my own observations and research. After analyzing my paper, I came to a conclusion that I need more practice on the citation in APA format, as well, I need …show more content…
Therefore, my intended audiences is my professor and anyone who is in the Child Development field or anyone who are interested in child’s play. I want them to know that with different gender can affect the children to play certain roles because of the environments that the children are surrounded by. The expectations that my readers will need is having evidence and other sources to support it which I include my own findings and have other concrete sources to help back up. One of the areas that the reader will find the evidence to support my findings would be in the literature review section where I stated, “In Riley et al.’s (2007) summary article reviewing on the difference of play and the interaction between girls and boys. The researcher has found that girls tend to choose activities that will allow them to have conversations within the activity in contrast to boys, they then to have activities that are highly active.” Later in my paper, I used my observation to support it which I stated on page 6 paragraphs 2 and I wrote that, “However, there was another girl group who was less active. They were more sitting and having a conversation with each other. In contrast, the boys were aggressive and very active in their physical play.” By having sources to back up my observations, my readers will understand and agree with me or disagrees with me. Additionally, I am writing this research paper to convey information to my readers to let them know more about a child’s play and see if there is a difference in the play depending on the child’s gender. This research paper is flexible because we get to come up with our own questions and find the result on our own with the help of other academic sources. The image that I want to convey to my readers is that I am a serious student and that this research is something that I am interested in it and want to do
This trimester I began the class English 101 with mixed feelings. Depending on the topic and style, I could really enjoy writing. However, there were occasionally times where I just did not feel much inspiration, and consequently, my writing quality was not exactly remarkable. My previous course to English 101 was AP Literature, where I learned how to analyze writing and write powerful papers. Although, to my disadvantage for this class, the teacher was more concerned about content than presentation and grammar technicalities. I learned to create good ideas and responses, and while I did possess the ability to convey them with proficiency, I could not express myself at a college level. Nonetheless, I can happily report that I have acquired these skills throughout English 101, learning to curb my near addiction to prepositional phrases, in addition to halting my use of coordinating conjunctions to begin sentences. I find it pleasing to read and compare my first essay to my latest one, seeing all of the differences and enhancements. My writing has improved through the trials of in-depth analyses and short deadlines, enabling me to perform my best no matter the style or topic. Overcoming the oppositions found in the class and my own
I would like to start off with thanking you for having the time to review the work and effort that I have put into my English 101 Final Portfolio. In the time in class that I have had this quarter I have learned new techniques that I had not known before in writing, for example I have learned about how to build paragraphs in a correct formal way. In my work in the portfolio I hope to show how my skills as a writer have improved from the work I have done before. I plan to take the experience that I have had in this class and take it with me to help me improve as a student on other class topics. In the time that I have been in class I believe that it has helped me in a positive way to help me manage my time, along with building my confidence in writing. In this beginning of the quarter I had many challenges when it came to writing a paper and I feel that I have improved my skills when it came to writing an essay.
When going through life learning is an everyday occurrence as each day is constantly filled with information that is used throughout the course of your life. Each day we get stronger and stronger in whatever we decide to put our minds to, weather that be academics, sports, our jobs we are constantly learning and growing on a daily basis. This semester I have grown in English as I personally felt that through the English 102 course I have been able to grasp some key concepts and writing techniques that will better me for the future. In this class there was a list of goals and outcomes that the instructor felt would be achievable and the best way to learn throughout the course. In each goal throughout this process I feel like I have improved to some degree but there is other things that I do need to touch up on a bit more to further my writing education outside the classroom.
I took English 2 Semester 1 my sophomore year of Highschool. I took the challenge to take English 2 honors that year. I was nervous to take that class knowing i had to be hardworking. i did work hard that semester. I would always complete my work, my quiz scores were high. My grade for the whole semster was at a stable B. I can say I was a good student. It was one day, towards the end of the semester that the class was assigned an essay. I was able to complete the essay, i followed what the directions asked us to do.I answered the prompt with no problem. When I checked infinite campus, I had seen that I received a zero on the assignment. The essay category is a high percentage grade. That essay was the only assignment going into that category. The reason i did not receive a passing grade in my English 2 semester 1 class and am now taking summer
When I first entered this class, I already knew that it wasn’t going to be easy just because I 'm not good with putting things into words and explaining myself with proper grammar. I can honestly say English 101 has really inspired me to be a better writer. This class affected me in a lot of ways it showed me that writing takes time and you can 't expect a paper to be great without any revising or editing. That has always been a mistake of mine, I would tend to free write a lot it seemed to be the only way I could get my thoughts processed on a paper. I would forget periods, commas and misspell words without even noticing. I never cared much for punctuation, but once I got into this class I knew it was much needed. The topics we wrote on were not just any random topics which in a way made it more interesting to write about things that are actually important and things our generation should be informed about.
Unit 1 taught me to focus on each step in the writing process. Approaching the task
This semester entering English 102 I thought of myself as a bad writer with a lot to say and no idea how to coordinate it or express it. A big reason why I took English stretch composition was to strengthen my writing skills. I feel like I have a better idea of where to put my ideas but I really need help with the technical writing and how to do research papers correctly. My concerns over the semester are not the same as they were at the beginning, they have changed. One of my concerns was that I wouldn’t know how to organize a college essay, but that concern is gone now. A new concern I have this semester is my run on sentences and the punctuation and the lack thereof.
Writing is something I always struggled with throughout my academic career. Whether it is for the English class or any other liberal arts class, I have a tendency to deviate from the main task of writing. This semester I took a FIQWS Composition class which helped me explore the unexplored areas of my academic writing. There are three main essays Literacy narrative, exploratory essay and Critical Researched analysis each improved my writing tremendously. In the first day of class, I was surprised to see the amount of work is expected from me because there were only three major essays and three reflections. I thought the workload would not be so intense because of the limited assignments. However, as the Semester has progressed, the work required
My portfolio will demonstrate the skills and writing techniques I have developed and honed while taking the course English 1010 at the University of Memphis. Some of the techniques and skills I have learned include how to write with different persuasive strategies on the audience and how to incorporate critical thinking into my work. As well as these skills I have learned how to apply an effective composing process to my writing and have fine tuned my writing abilities. Writing with different styles on different topics has improved the way I approach writing papers. These styles helped me learn quickly, therefore making me a better writer and student at the same time.
From each of my previous English classes from summer 2014 to summer 2015, I have learned a new method on writing a good essay and same method that I have learned previously. When learning the new method of writing a good essay, it was hard as I got too used to doing the regular way of writing an essay. That would be the reason why I would struggle sometime to write a good paper as each English class I take would learn a new unique or same method. I am getting better as I steadily improving my weak points in my paper, but I would still have some problems with grammars in most of my paragraphs, which is the reason why I would go to learning center and have peers review to see where I should change and improved the essay. Learning same and different methods from each English class is difficult to get used to and it takes little by little to develop an excellent paper to turn in.
After reading the two pieces from Yancey, and Royster and Kirsch, I thought for a while about what the word ‘reflection’ means to me. I have never looked at the word in relation to my writing. Writing has never been a strong (or favorite) suit of mine. I have always despised re-reading/ revising my paper, for the fear of not wanting to seem inadequate to other writers (I would compare it to that of hearing your own voice on a recording, thinking, “Do I really sound like that?”). Besides writing, I would best describe reflection as looking at the past, and analyzing your feelings during that period as well as your current feelings for what took place. I used to not use reflective practices in my daily life, but this year I made it a goal
From early on, I knew English would be my kryptonite. I was never interested in the subject and the books assigned along with the endless research papers made me resent the “boring” subject even more. It seemed as though many of my teachers in the past did not care for our feelings towards the material we covered or how we grew as readers and writers. We had no say in what we wanted to do or what we wanted to get out of the class. I understand that we had standards and certain things we needed to cover by the end of the year, but it would have been helpful if the teachers cared about what we wanted to learn, not only about reading and writing, but about ourselves as well. With that being said, I can now say reading and writing is a big part
I have never been good at english and I have always needed help, particularly with some essays. Depending on what that topic is, I could do a good job but more often I need my essays to be looked over. This quarter, I have been having many assignments in my english class that are in fact essays. I was unsure about an essay that was assigned about two weeks ago, so after I had written my rough draft, I went to visit my English teacher during her office hours. The fact that my teacher is so nice and friendly also made it easier for me to actually attend here office hours and ask her questions about my essay. I specifically asked her questions about my introduction and conclusion, since those are the main parts of my essay that I was iffy about.
Before I came to English 101 I was more of a raw writer than most people. Although I would write my papers filled with great content, I would also have many problems with my grammer and organization. Throughout my time in this class I have developed and trained multiple areas of my writing. Some of the areas that I have improved the most have been grammer, organization, and MLA format. These areas have lead to an evolution in my writing that has given me a new level of understanding in English. Which has provided me with the skills that will endow me to achieve success in english 102.
After reading the syllabus and attending the first English class, I thought I would pass the class with flying colors. The expectations and mission of the class seemed achievable and I wasn't worried about the rigor because of how approachable and flexible the professors are and the tutors available in the Academic Success Center. English 1303 definitely met the expectations and correlated with promoting growth in writing. With each assignment, every student learned how to incorporate lessons from class in their writing.
