This journal aims at reflecting relevant content from the 6o hours of TESOL internship. The internship comprises of 2o hours of classroom observation, 20 hours of serviced learning, 10 hours of supervised teaching and 10 hours of volunteer teaching. The classroom observation, serviced learning and the supervised teaching were engaged in at the Western Sydney University (WSU) College at Westmead. 10 hours of the volunteer teaching were undertaken as a volunteer teacher for Mission Australia.
Task 1: Classroom Observation
Classes at WSU College are administered five days a week from Monday to Friday. Each day is divided in to two sessions. The first session is conducted from 9 am to 11 am followed by an hour’s break. It is essential for the students to feel comfortable in the classroom as well as at ease with each other and the teacher to be able to concentrate on learning.
Also as pointed out by Ferlazzo & Sypnieski, 2012 internet access, computer labs, document cameras computer projectors, computer labs are tools that positively impact language learning. They can be utilised to reinforce learning as well as a strategic vehicle to enhance student engagement. However Ferlazzo & Sypnieski have also clarified that substantial learning can take place without the use of technology.
Constructing knowledge through participation, experience and experimentation also known as the hands on approach works really well with language learning (Ferlazzo & Sypnieski, 2012). All the teachers at WSU College aimed at supporting students in constructing their own knowledge through participating in games and activities. As a result successful learning was encouraged by involving students in tasks that grasp their interest.
