Over the years of my high school life I have had to cope and deal with various amounts of difficult obstacles that have, to some extent, held me back from reaching my goals. Over this last summer I struggled, but made it through the toughest thing I've ever experienced. I went on an environmental studies trip to the Hawaiian Islands that while was the most memorable, influential experience I've ever been able to accomplish, was still extremely challenging and completely different from my laid-back lifestyle. In order to go on this trip I was required to write 5 essays on different topics that are currently popular issues in Hawaii. This was quite a strenuous task for me because I've never had a strong gift in writing. But there was also a journal that had to be written in every day, a workbook full of work for every place we travelled to, and the fifteen page paper we had to write when we got back. I soon realized that was just the beginning of the many strenuous tasks to come, for once I got to the islands I was introduced to an entirely dissimilar lifestyle than the one I live.

A serious problem that affects Hawaii today is the decline of natural forests due to the importing of invasive species and widespread deforestation. Majority of Hawaii’s natural forest have depleted and what is left is either being used for housing and farming, or preserved by the state. Little has been done to combat this besides the 1% of State funding that’s being used to run preservation systems.

Looking back at my time from English 112 gave me a greater feel and look at what kind of writer I am ultimately am. While going through my senior year of high school and taking a college level class I was skeptical if I was even able to accomplish that high of a writing requirement but to my surprise I fought my way through. In my journey of fighting until the end I learned a good amount about myself that even if I wasn’t feeling up to writing the five page papers that we had to write I always found myself doing them at the end. In the past three months I feel like I have accomplished a great deal. As the semester comes to an end I find myself reflecting not only how I have survived the first semester but also what I have learned. The most important thing I have learned so far is how to become a better writer. I did not think it could really happen to me. I did not think I could handle all the work. I did not think I could actually become a better writer. Some how after all the hours of writing, and putting effort into the papers that I wrote this semester, I became a better writer. I did this because I concentrated on two very important areas, with the attitude of, if I could just become better in those then I would become a better writer. With help from an awesome teacher and a reliable tutor I have become a better writer by improving my skills in the areas of procrastination and content.
The first day of my junior year I was extremely overwhelmed by this class; all the essays we were required to write in the first week didn't help much either. However, since the beginning of the year I have learned so many useful and important lessons which have guided my learning throughout this first semester and, I'm assuming, will continue to guide me for the rest of my high school experience and beyond. In addition, I have made many goals which pertain to essays I have written, and I believe I have met those goals.
My journey through high school as a writer has been quite fruitful. I have refined many of weaknesses, including organizations and introductions, and am still perfectly some as I go, like time management and conclusions. I learned that there is no such thing as a perfect paper; there is always room for improvement in my writing skills. Also, I have learned to see my writing through different perspectives and portray abstract concepts in my work. Hawaii is a small chain of islands nearly 4,300 miles away and was the last state to be admitted to the Union of the United States of America. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the act the made Hawaii a state on August 21, 1959. There are eight main islands: Hawaii, Maui, Oahu, Kauai, Molokai, Lanai, Niihau, and Kahoolawe. These islands were made by a series of volcanic eruptions. Over 7 million people visit Hawaii each year.
Since 1840 the Hawaiian Islands have been an escape to a tropical paradise for millions of tourists. People all over the world encounter alluring, romanticized pictures of Hawai'i's lush, tropical vegetation, exotic animals, beautiful beaches, crystal clear water, and fantastical women. This is the Hawai'i tourists know. This is the Hawai’i they visit. However, this Hawai'i is a state of mind, a corporate-produced image existing on the surface. More precisely, it is an aftermath of relentless colonization of the islands' native inhabitants by the United States. These native Hawaiians experience a completely different Hawai'i from the paradise tourists enjoy. No one makes this as clear as Haunani-Kay Trask, a native Hawaiian author. In her book, From a Native Daughter: Colonialism and Sovereignty in Hawai'i and through her poetry in Light in the Crevice Never Seen, Trask provides an intimate account of the tourist industry's impact on native Hawaiian culture. She presents a negative perspective of the violence, pollution, commercial development, and cultural exploitation produced by the tourist industry. Trask unveils the cruel reality of suffering and struggling through a native Hawaiian discourse. Most of the world is unaware of this.
Over the years of my schooling, I have gradually developed my writing preparation to help me become a better writer. I continue to find ways to improve my writing abilities by working on my weaknesses and by incorporating the feedback I receive from my peers and my instructors into my essays. At times, I still struggle when preparing to start my essay, but with precise and organized planning and obtaining the help of others, I am certain that I will become more proficient in my writing
However, when it came time to write the essay, I was confronted with my old enemy, writing. Writing and I have a history, I have never enjoyed being in the presence of writing, due to its both mentally and physically taxing requirements. Despite our deeply rooted feud, there are times where I cannot simply dismiss writing, and generally with help such as guided activities, exemplars, and therapy; Writing and I can put aside our differences for a brief moment of time. One example of this is in my argument, In the beginning sentence I feel that I was able to reach what was expected of me by created a strong counter argument and quickly proving it wrong: “Some might argue that if an individual has grown fond of an illusion, then why wake them from that joy? Now, that is a fair point, but as we see in the book, if they wake up, they realize how unhappy they truly are.” As I face more and more of these assignments where I am forced to implement writing, I grow more accustomed to the process. Writing might not be my ideal major, but I understand its importance. While I dread typing a 5 page essays, I know they are coming. Better I struggle know and learn than struggle later and

Hawaii is my home. I was born here, and I was raised here. As a matter of fact I haven’t been out of the state for more than a week at a time. On a day to day basis food isn’t anything special. I’ll eat what any other local on the island will eat. Portuguese sausage and eggs for breakfast, a spam musubi for lunch, and kalua pig and cabbage for dinner. When it comes to food I’m not particularly picky, I’ll eat almost anything. Keep in mind, I am a cornucopia of ethnicities which includes being Hawaiian. I have more ethnicities than I can count on one hand so its no surprise that I do not have a preference for food that I eat on the daily. As I look back on my schooling I can’t believe how many papers I’ve written throughout my life. Naturally as I’ve grown up, my writing has developed from learning how to write sentences all the way up to the pages of essays that consist of deeper criteria. I know for a fact that I’m a better writer now than I was before. College writing is more challenging and I’ve had to learn how to adjust to it.
The greatest difficulty that I came across doing the first essay was retracing the past, retracing the sadness. Having to bring back sad memories that made my life terrible at the time. Doing the essay, I learned that I have gone through a lot of crap. I was sinking in quicksand and now I stand on the quicksand like it is rock solid. I am proud of myself. I was able to turn my life around and be the person that I am today. I might have the potential to be a good writer someday. People compliment on my writing skills every now and then when I write something long. That makes me feel like a real student. I say that because an old History teacher of mine used to tell kids to be students when they were not doing their work.
