Redbox Automated Retail, LLC – Marketing Mix
Redbox Automated Retail, LLC specializes in automated DVDs, Blu-ray Discs and video games rentals, was founded by McDonald’s Corporation. Customers are able to rent movies or video games at an affordable price via a vending machine. The idea was to drive more traffic to McDonald’s and added convenience to customers. In 2002, the company tested two concepts by placing fully automated convenience store kiosks (vending-like machine that sells anything from milk to shampoo) and DVD rental kiosks in the Washington D.C. area. The DVD kiosks succeeded and redbox eventually withdrew from the grocery vending machines (The History, 2014). In 2004, redbox was placed in McDonald’s throughout the Denver, CO area. Customers responded positively and the DVD kiosks were expanded to Baltimore, Houston, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Salt Lake City and St. Louis (Goodrich, 2014).
In November 2005, Coinstar, known for its expertise in placing kiosks in high traffic locations, bought 47 percent of redbox making it a separate company from McDonald’s. The DVD rental kiosks quickly branched out into grocery stores, convenience stores, drug stores and mass-merchant shops. In February 2009, purchased all of redbox from McDonald’s. As Coinstar as its parent company, redbox is leading the way in video rental kiosks (The History, 2014).

Cineplex Inc. is a Canadian Film Exhibitor company that operates only in Canada for the time being. It operates in the Entertainment industry, and pretty much has a monopoly over the movie theatre and film exhibition sector in most parts of Canada. However, the current data in Canada suggests that Video-On-Demand (VOD) popularity is experiencing a rather rapid increase, followed by an increase in sector’s development and revenue all around. Nowadays, all of the major Canadian broadcasting companies -- such as Rogers -- offer some sort of VOD service to their customers.2 Therefore, the net attendance of movie theatres, Cineplex Inc. in particular, inevitably go through a yearly drop. On the other hand, the industry is constantly growing and attempting to overcome its obstacles by introducing new features and services. Therefore, the profitability of the industry is constantly sustained.
“Stock of the online DVD rental company was up more than 15% in early morning trading Thursday. Netflix increased their forecasts for both revenue and total subscribers today, trying to compete with powerhouses like Blockbuster and Wal-Mart. The increased forecast stems from a slew of new subscribers that have invested in the service after a price decrease from $21.99 to $17.99 last month. Despite the increases in revenue and subscribers however, some analysts feel that the business model is “fatally flawed” and the company may fall by the wayside due to competition from the aforementioned retail and entertainment powerhouses.” Investors Guide reported this.
In this case study we will gain a better understanding of TiVo, Inc. and how it has struggled to find success in a market they are known to be the innovator. At this point there are very few television viewers in North American that do not know what TiVo does for TV viewing. However, most consumers do not know the history or struggles this company has been through since creating the product in the late 1990’s. After reading this case study it is clear the creators of the TiVo were visionaries but it is also clear they were not business people too. Sadly, this might be the eventual demise of the company that clearly had the market in the palm of their hand. We will examine some of their flaws and how TiVo might regain some of the momentum to become a profitable organization.

Reed Hastings, co-founder of Netflix headquartered in Los Gatos, CA, began the company’s operations in 1997 after receiving an enormous late charge from a movie rental he returned long overdue. However, Hastings had the desire to be different than traditional movie outlets; whereas, customers had to drive to the location, pay a certain amount for each movie they rented, and were given a deadline in which to return the movie. Instead of using a method established by other video markets “to attract customers to a retail location, Netflix offered home delivery of DVDs through the mail” which eventually led to a booming business towards streaming forms of entertainment (Shih, Kaufman, & Spinola, 2009, p. 3). Today, Netflix exists along with several competitors; however, offers the most streaming content available for viewing, and continues to grow its subscriber base both domestically and globally. Although, direct and indirect competitors, acquisition costs, and several barriers present a financial threat for Netflix, the company has managed to grow with the acclamation of partnerships, expand to international territories, and vastly increase its price in shares of stock.
Video Rental and Streaming has partly been of the most significant avenues of the general home entertainment industry in the United States for many years. It promotes constructive development through various channels such as Information Technology, Public Multimedia and it also has a huge impact on people’s lives and their entertainment on demand. One of the best companies which provide this high-advanced service is Netflix, Inc (Netflix). It was incorporated on August 29th in 1997 in California by Reed Hastings & Marc Randolph; listed on NASDAQ as NFLX in 2002. Netflix is the world’s largest Internet subscription service streaming television shows and movies with over 40 million members in 40 countries (Netflix, 2013).
Suppliers, being the movie studios, can basically charge whatever they want for the viewing rights to new movies.
The idea inspired Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph, and then they founded Netflix in Scotts Valley, California in 1997 (Netflix, 2014). The company comes into play by developing a subscription-based streaming platform for movies and television shows. Unlike the traditional movie rental businesses such as Blockbuster and Redbox, Netflix’s innovation offers service via Internet, and it does not have any physical stores but instead delivers DVDs through postal mail in the U.S. Since then, Netflix has become the world’s leading internet television network with constant growth of customers to over 48 millions members in more than 40 countries in the North America, Europe, and the Latin America (Netflix, 2014). In this analysis, the main focus is examining the current market environment for Netflix. It identifies the type of market structure that Netflix is currently competing. The analysis also expands on the competitions, product differentiation, pricing strategy, and measuring the level of easy entry-and-exit.
The outlook for Netflix has developed a trend of continuous growth with subscribers and providing products with a substantial cost advantage by distributing a wide variety of titles that appeal to different customer groups (Anthony, 2005). The success of Netflix was simply listening to consumer’s feedback regard...
According to the history of movie rental, home video, and gaming, Netflix was the first company to introduce the movie rental service back in April of 1998 and offered more than 900 titles (Lardener, 2010). Ever since, the industry has become larger with new technology such as online streaming and next day delivery. Also, more competitors are now available and provide the same services, such as Amazon, Wal-Mart, blockbuster, and Redbox kiosks.
After receiving a ridiculously high fee for returning a movie late, Reed Hastings said that there had to be a better way to rent and watch movies and TV shows from the comfort of their own homes. Hence, in 1997 Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph, a software executive, co-found what is known today as Netflix, “the world’s leading internet subscription service for enjoying movies and TV shows,” (Netflix, Facts). The purpose of this paper is to the process of exchange between Netflix and their customers, as well as Netflix’s approach to relationship marketing and how this marketing technique has helped Netflix leave their competitors in the dust when it comes to customer satisfaction.
... distributors whatsoever since they already bought the rights. So how would that make these rental shops different from the regular people who bought DVDs and decided to make copies to give it away for free, even just to upgrade it to Blu-ray so that he could play it on his new player? Nothing, because they already bought the rights to the material and it gives them the right to do whatever they want as long as they do not claim it as their own work.
A movie theater has its advantages and disadvantages. One advantage is that people can see the showing of different movies that have been newly released. The disadvantage is that, that is all there is to it and nothing more. At home, you can control the variety and ways to watch a movie. People buy many movies to watch at home and it can be anything at any time even at any place. The only bad thing about it is that they cannot see any of the newest released movies that recently came out in theaters. There are two types of ways people watch movies at their homes. One way is people already own DVDs or have bought many of them and start watching them in their DVD players. The other ways are streaming a movie through the internet. For this to happen, people would mainly buy the monthly subscriptions such as Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime. Through this subscription people do not only watch movies in their homes but they also watch television shows. The only downside is there is a very limited number of movies added onto these
