Addiction and recovery are a lifelong process. This essay looks at the outcome of addiction and the recovery process as a whole. By identifying addiction we will eliminate the consideration that recovery is not possible. Kemp describes that addiction often arises through a pursuit of pleasure, or to reduce pain. (Kemp, 2009a). The addict seeks to avoid the world, often living a narrow set of relations to the world and those in it. (Kemp, 2011). However; meeting an addict with their family often sheds a completely different light on matters of stasis and potential. (Kemp, 20111). Negative feelings towards addicts, both formal healthcare and in society in general is not a simple prejudice. While hate may be pervasive, it is love and compassion which overcomes addiction and fosters recovery. (Butler & Kemp, 2014). Addiction and Recovery In conclusion, the problem of addiction may seem impossible to overcome at first, however; there are steps that can be taken in order to obtain recovery. First, the individual who is the addict must admit that there is a problem in order to begin the recovery process and weaken the hold of drug addiction. Next, the individual must be willing to seek professional help with an open and honest mind. They must be willing to let go of all negative influences including family, and friends. There are many different definitions in which people provide regarding addiction. Relapse prevention can be defined as the set of designed coping skills or tools that can be utilized to reduce the chances that the user will resort back to unhealthy behavior or get worse through continued substance use. Knowledge or skills for relapse prevention include; identification of early signs of relapse, identifying and singling out high risk factors for a possible relapse, how to make wise daily choices that won’t lead the client back to drug abuse, and implementing early coping strategies to avoid relapse (Sofuoglu, 2010).

Overcoming an addiction to alcohol can be a long and bumpy road. Many people feel that it is impossible to overcome an alcohol addiction. Many people feel that is it easier to be an addict than to be a recovering addict. Despite how hard one works to overcome a substance addiction or those who have even mastered their sobriety; a negative stigma generally haunts them throughout their life. For individuals coping with addiction and the day to day difficulties, which addiction presents, they often feel many negative sentiments from society. Together with the task of managing their symptoms, low self esteem, a fear of relapse, depression and the negative stigma from the general public can only be seen as a bleak road to recovery.
This experience helped me to recognize the internal struggle that a substance abuser faces on a continuous basis. In addition, I know that an individual can have a difficult time changing their behavior even when they have a strong desire to change; the smallest thing can cause a person to relapse.

The strategies are not mutually exclusive and could be combined to increase treatment efficacy. In recent times, insurance providers have considerably reduced treatment time for substance abuse. Therefore, counselors assisting clients in their recovery process need to make use of the most modern and efficient counseling techniques so the client can rehabilitate within the time frame established by the health insurers. Moreover, second, many people believe being an addict will never happen to them, but, in reality, most addictions start off as simple little habits. Such as starting with one drink after dinner and before you know it you are drinking several drinks a day. However, one does not opt to be addicted to a substance, because addictions are physical defects in the brain, a disease, and not one’s choice.
