Everybody has had fear of the dark sometime in their life, but it’s not the actual darkness that’s scary, it’s what our imaginations tells us is inside. The pile of clothes on the dresser suddenly turns to a monster…, the ordinary house creaks turn into a ghostly figure living in your house. We don’t know what it is in the dark and as we try to imagine what lies inside we start to see the worst fears we have. It 's not the darkness we fear but what it represents. Once the lights turn on though, you realize that the “monster” was just a pile of clothes in your very messy room. All the fears go away and we see things how they are supposed to be with no illusions or mind games.
This all leads back to the natural human instinct of being afraid of what we don’t know. We’d rather listen to media outlets, fictional TV shows, tall tales, legends, biased articles rather than listening to each other or figuring out the truth for ourselves. We would rather not help the homeless, and state that we are afraid and use excuses such as they would try to steal from us, or use the money to buy drugs. We would rather “be ruined than learn and be changed. We would rather die in our dread than climb across”, make a difference in the world, and let out illusions die. “If you’re not careful enough, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing” (Malcom X) these are just a few examples of what a bunch of cowards we have become. ...ut the “evil world we live in” but the majority of people are too afraid to make a change because we fear being ridiculed, and being attacked physically and mentally. Do you think Malala wasn’t aware that she was practically signing her own death sentence by choosing to stand against Taliban? She was “shot in the head in an attempt to end her campaign for girl’s rights to go to school. Malala says “they can only shoot a body, they cannot shoot my dreams”.
There will always be fear, but do it anyway. Let your courage inspire you and the world around you. Our fear of the unknown can be solved by flipping the switch. Fear is the path to the darkness. Fear leads to anger, and anger leads to hate, and hate leads to suffering. Let’s simply turn on the lights in a world filled with darkness, like we did as children, and watch as the things we used to fear simply disappear.
