Enzymes are protein based molecules that help to speed up reactions in other molecules. They cause reactions without being used up or changing after the reaction is completed. Enzymes are the body’s workers and they are produced by all living things. Enzymes are made of chains of amino acids. The amino acids are linked in specific ways to complete whichever job they were made to do. Each enzyme was built for a different job and will only work with a specific substance. The efficiency of enzymes is dependant on the temperatures that enzymes are exposed to. A high temperature of heat that is above 60°c will destroy the enzyme’s ability to function. Enzymes work by attaching to a substance that is going into a chemical reaction. After attaching to the substance they lower the activation energy. Activation energy is energy required to make the reactions happen. Lowering the energy required in the reaction will make the reactions go much faster. Enzymes are necessary for healthy digestion. Enzymes control all of the chemical reactions. Enzymes are crucial to all living things.

The Interesting, Complex Digestive System Essay

- The human digestive system is a bodily process made up of many systems, organs and substances that break down food both physically and chemically for use by the body. But what exactly is human digestion and what happens to food as it moves through the digestive system. “…[digestion] is a group of organs working together to convert food into energy and basic nutrients to feed the entire body” (Tim Taylor). There are three major bodily mechanisms that contribute to the process of digestion. The first mechanism is the breakdown of food, the second mechanism is the process of extracting nutrients from food, and the third mechanism is excretion, or the body’s natural waste system....   [tags: body, enzymes, organs]

Essay about Enzymes Enhances the Digestive System

- The ideal purpose of the gastrointestinal or digestive system is to take the immense bolus’ of food made of lipids, carbohydrates, and protein and dissect them into particles tiny enough so that they can be consumed into the cardiovascular system of the body where the body can deploy on the the substances necessary for health and progression in the body. The way these bolus’ of food are dissected is by a process called mastication and the chemical changes of the gastrointestinal system and it’s enzymes....   [tags: pancreas, protein, acid]

The Industrial Uses of Enzymes Essay

- The Industrial Uses of Enzymes Enzymes are catalysts made up of polymers of Amino Acids, and they’re very useful inside and outside our body. Enzymes, like other catalysts, speed up chemical reactions, and over 700 of their kind are known in today’s world, since being discovered in the 1850s. There are many industrial applications of enzymes, and they speed up processes that could take years to be completed. FERMENTATION: Making beer and whisky was known to humans for the past 8,000 years....   [tags: Papers]

Essay on Industrial Uses of Enzymes

- Industrial Uses of Enzymes Most of the reactions catalysed by enzymes have commercial or industrial uses. These reactions used to happen by using high heats or strong acids but no enzymes can be used in these industrial processes. Here are just a few ways they can be used. Biological washing powders use the enzyme protease. This is enzyme is used to break down protein stains for example food and blood. The enzymes need alkali conditions to work there best and the detergents provide this....   [tags: Papers]

The Uses of Enzymes in Industry and Medicine Essay

- The Uses of Enzymes in Industry and Medicine Enzymes are used in a wide range of industries for a number of reasons, the main one being that they accelerate reactions by lowering the activation energy. Enzymes are proteins with specifically shaped active sights that have charges on their surfaces. This means that they react with only one substrate to produce a specific product minimising the production of unwanted by-products. They work at neutral pH and standard atmospheric temperature and pressure, and so are energy saving as well as being relatively inexpensive to produce....   [tags: Papers]

Uses of Enzymes in Medicine and Industry Essay

- Uses of Enzymes in Medicine and Industry Enzymes are used widely across medicine and industry. Through this essay I will go through some examples of each case, and explain the complexities of these examples. Enzymes are biological catalysts that enable specific reactions to take place. Catalysts are widely used in industry, to increase the rate of a reaction, or allow the reaction to take place without resorting to high temperatures and pressures. One of the most important and widely used enzymes in industry and everyday life is the catalytic converter in cars....   [tags: Papers]

The Uses of Enzymes In Industry, Medicine and Analytical and Diagnostic Processes

- The Uses of Enzymes In Industry, Medicine and Analytical and Diagnostic Processes Enzymes are very precise protein molecules with a high specificity which are used to catalyse chemical reactions by lowering the activation energy required for the reaction to take place. It is these properties of being able to break down substances easily and bind specifically to certain chemicals that make enzymes very useful in many industries and practices throughout the world. In addition to this enzymes are not used up in experiments so products of processes are not contaminated with enzyme which could be a problem....   [tags: Papers]

Commercial Uses of Enzymes Essay

- Commercial Uses of Enzymes The use of enzymes to modify foods has increased vastly and these fermentations are continuing to be important, however, a new type of enzyme industry has evolved which involves the use of harvesting enzymes from microorganisms. The production of enzymes from bacteria and fungi can be isolated from the growth media and cleansed and purified as necessary. Generally in industrial processes the enzyme is immobilised which allows t h enzyme to be re-used and also enable the products to be separated easily....   [tags: Papers]

Female Mosquito Digestive Enzymes Essay

- Introduction Mosquitoes are remembered by most as being the bane of the outdoor barbecue; the reason that bug zappers were invented. However, mosquitoes are not really as bad as some people think. To begin with, mosquitoes are equal opportunity pests. They will go after anything with blood, not just human flesh. In fact, it is only the female mosquito who bites; the male mosquitoes don't drink blood and are relatively innocent. Finally, mosquitoes are extremely well adapted to what they do. When a female mosquito bites an animal, certain chemicals in the animal's blood tell her when she has hit a blood vessel....   [tags: Biology Aedes Aegypti]

Enzymes Essay

- Enzymes Enzymes are biological catalysts that carry out thousands of chemical reactions that occur in living cells. They are a class of proteins that have a unique three dimensional structure that allows it to bind with a specific substrate to facilitate a reaction. Many biological reactions will not occur spontaneously in the cell; there is simply not enough energy for the reaction to take place. Enzymes make these reactions possible by lowering the reactionÂ’s activation energy....   [tags: Papers]
