Generally, students don’t read outside of class. They are stressed because of homework and just go home to watch TV as a way to rid themselves of their worries. A reported fact from a survey of 136 freshman high school students is that, “41 percent of freshman students receive homework assignments every day of the week” (Wilson 3). A more conducive way to erase stress from the school day would be to sit down and read an enjoyable book. Most students of this modern age have no time to delve into a book and be lost in its pages for hours on end. Part of it could be that students are overwhelmed by homework or they are too lazy. Another part of it could be that they have no motivation to read a book because without pictures, books are meaningless to them. In order to inspire students to enjoy reading for the rest of their lives, teachers and schools should allow the students to pick a book, make various trips to the library, and expose students to different book genres.
In elementary school, students would generally go to the library at least once a week to a month to pick out a book to read for independent reading. At times, students wouldn’t come back to class with a book because they have no desire to read. It would be better for students if they had a say in what the library carried. We need to understand that “children are the actual consumers of the resources” (Sanacore 1) in the libraries. So, the librarians should have student-friendly books on the shelves at all times. In order to obtain books that the younger students enjoy, the teachers should observe students “browsing and choosing materials from the school library” (Sanacore 2) to begin with. If one has such an aversion to reading, they aren’t a reader and that is quite fine. Some people aren’t the reading type. When school instructors nurture a child’s love for reading, the world may become more literate and engage in more reading as opposed to watching TV or playing videogames. Without reading, one would not have the motivation to learn what he is interested in. So, foster independent reading throughout elementary, middle school, and even high school because students will become immersed in their work and lead more productive lives. Mr. Holt spent fourteen years as an elementary school teacher. He believed classroom activities destroy a student’s learning ability. Mr. Holt never let his students say what they thought about a book. He wanted his students to look up every word they didn’t know. People can learn difficult words without looking them up in the dictionary.
When I was younger, my mother and my sister were always glued to books. I could never understand what was so amazing about hundreds of pages with tiny print bound together with some ridiculous title and picture. As time passed and I got older, I dreaded any day that came with a present. I always got books I would never read instead of cool toys or simply money. It was not until I was about 16 years old in a tenth grade, English honors class that I realized I loved to read. That was the very first time I picked up Stephen King’s Christine. Instantly I fell in love with the hundreds of pages and tiny print. I know people may refer to reading as boring and time consuming. However, reading literature of any kind allows students to achieve their billion dollar dreams, instead of minimum wage nightmares.
While I believe every child is a reader, I do not believe every child will be enthralled with reading all the time. All students have the capability to read and enjoy reading, but just like any other hobby, interest will vary from student to student. The students in my classroom will be encouraged in their reading, be provided with choice, taught how books can take you into another world but, my students will not be forced to read. This paper will illustrate my philosophy of reading through the theories I relate to, the way I want to implement reading and writing curriculum, and the methods I will use motivate my students to read and help them become literate.
Ever since I was a child, I've never liked reading. Every time I was told to read, I would just sleep or do something else instead. In "A Love Affair with Books" by Bernadete Piassa tells a story about her passion for reading books. Piassa demonstrates how reading books has influenced her life. Reading her story has given me a different perspective on books. It has showed me that not only are they words written on paper, they are also feelings and expressions.
When I was younger I used to like reading a lot, but since middle school, we have been told what to read and how quickly to read it. This year, we were allowed to read whatever we wanted as long as we did read, allowing me to read 3 books I never would have read alone. Since this school year started, I personally have looked forward to the beginning of class every day when we get time to read our book. It helps to transition into a reading/writing state of mind and to make class more enjoyable. This school year made me believe two things about implemented reading in the classroom; this system helps make kids more understanding and patient, encourage them to read by choice, and it also helps students become more self-reliant.
My love for reading came about in my elementary school days. I went through a short period where I felt like I didn’t fit in with any of the other students. I was never skillful at socializing or playing games. I only had a couple of friends and still was lost. Most of the time, I felt like I was alone. I thought no one else could possibly understand or even begin to understand. Was I right? I actually was not. I just didn’t realize this until I understood my vast affection for books and how they made an impact on my life.

When students learn something with pleasure, they will remember it for the rest of their life. This is why students should be able to pick the books they will read in class next year. For example, they will be more engaged and want to read the book. Again, students should pick the books they will read, is that their grades will rise. The books they will read will affect whether or not they will know what to put on the worksheets about the book. The books students will read will affect how they see books in the future, and how it will affect them later in life.
Reading has been a part of my life from the second I was born. All throughout my childhood, my parents read to me, and I loved it. I grew up going to the library and being read to constantly. Especially in the years before Kindergarten, reading was my favorite thing to do. I grew up loving fairy tales and thriving on the knowledge that I could have any book I wanted, to be read to me that night. Having no siblings, my only examples were my parents, and they read constantly. Without a family that supported my love of reading throughout my childhood, I wouldn’t appreciate it nearly as much as I have and do now.
This, also, may be somewhat true, but it is much more enriching for students, and humans in general, to read material that they find interesting and important to them. People gain more enrichment from doing things they love than things they do not care about. Kids should be able to learn and read about things that actually matter to them, unlike the boring books that are assigned by schools.
