Interactive read-aloud. The teacher reads a book to the students, pausing at integral parts to comment and ask the students questions in order to facilitate comprehension.
Strategy lesson. Important reading strategies include previewing the text; activating prior knowledge; setting purposes; generating, verifying, and updating predictions; identifying text structures; using imagery and visualizing; and monitoring comprehension. Teaching these strategies is necessary for students’ comprehension.
Guided reading. Guided reading refers to individual reading by the student, guided and supported by the teacher. Guided reading often utilizes a gradual release of responsibility model in which the teacher reads first, the teacher and student together read next, and the student reads last.
Writer’s workshop. Writer’s workshops consist of a short mini-lesson detailing a specific strategy or concept with time for the students to write afterward.

Free reading. This is a set time during class in which children read a book of their own choosing for pleasure.
Free writing. Children should be given some time during the day in which they can write freely without constraints.
Multisensory activities. This can include usually nontraditional learning, such as learning through art or music, or creating words using tactilely stimulating substances, such as sand or playdough. Students can even learn kinesthetically by forming their bodies into the shapes of letters.
Games. Bingo, tic-tac-toe reading, or even alphabet board games can provide an incentive for children to learn while also having fun.
