“The Raven” is a narrative poem written by Edgar Allan Poe and published in 1845, Poe uses mournful words and sorrowful tone, along with metaphoric language to describe a lonely and grieving man who lost his love met a raven at midnight, and the word “Nevermore” repeated eleven times in the poem, is the only word the raven said, it is the raven’s name and the answer to the narrator’s question, leads a fantastical dialogue to a philosophical idea: once something is gone, it will never come back. The poem’s theme is dark. The title is “the Raven”. Raven is a bird represents death. Story take place in the midnight of December, midnight is end of a day, December is the last month of a year, implies it is the end.
When he open the door, no one is outside, only darkness, which bring him in to the deeper fear “darkness here….. long I stood there wondering fearing” (24~25) The narrator starts wondering, and doubting if it is his lost love Lenore come back and visit him. “And the only word there spoken was the word ‘Lenore’!” (27)
When he go back to his room, his thought about Lenore grow stronger, “and my soul within me burning”(31) Then he heard something from window, when he open the window, the raven came in and sit on the statue of Pallas. He thought it is pretty amazing to see a bird standing on a chamber door. “Ever yet was blessed with seeing bird above his chamber door”(52) The bird did not say anything after the word. The narrator starts to think about all his friend is gone, and so is this bird, just like his hope is gone. “Till I scarcely more then muttered’ other friends have flown before, on the morrow he will leave me , as my hope…” The narrator welcomed this is bird and sees it as his hope. Whenever the narrator questions the Raven on when his deceased love will return, or when he will stop grieving, the Raven responds with the repeated word “Nevermore” (Poe 102). The bird’s incessant reminders signify that since Lenore’s death is eternal, the narrator’s consequent anguish from it must be as well, which is why the narrator is incapable to ever recover from the Raven’s words on his loss. The poem begins with a man’s dark night being interrupted by a raven of the same hue. Traditionally, ravens are seen as bad omens and bringers of death since they are carrion birds and feed on the dead flesh of animals. The man, understanding the relation between the raven and death, associates the raven with “the Night’s Plutonian shore,” otherwise known as the underworld (48). Here the narrator is asking if he will ever be joyful again, once again he is doing this knowing the raven respond the same answer everytime. He actually believes what the raven is saying, which is driving him insane for this reason he’s causing his own demise. To make matters worse the narrator asks if “within the distant Aidenn, It shall clasp Clasp a sainted maiden whom the angels name Lenore” (Poe 15). He is inquiring if Lenore is in heaven, receiving no as an answer was his breaking point. Everyone definitely wants to hear the ones they love are in heaven, so why would the narrator ask the raven knowing the answer would be no? The raven’s response with “nevermore” is the Raven offering certainty to the narrator. The raven embodies the hopes of the narrator’s chance at feeling loved and cared for, and the Raven is seen as the free and unbound bird to which it comes and goes at the dawn of a new light (most likely referring to the beginning of a new relationship with another human being).
In “The Raven” there are many different variations of the same word never/and or more, is repeated 18 times once in each stanza. Poe uses nothing more, evermore, nevermore, and never. The word never is used 14 times by its self and with another word. The word never comes from the old English word naefre. Ne means no or not and aefre means ever. Never in English as an adverb can mean not ever; not at all, to no extent or degree. Never is also an idiom like, never mind. Nevermore is what the bird is saying. Means never again like how the speaker will never be sane again. Evermore means forever or henceforth like how Lenore will never come back to the speaker. Nothing more is a little more difficult. Nothing means nonexistent or no part of. More means in great amount or additional/ further. So nothing more; more or less means can mean a nonexistent addition or no longer available. Edger Allen Poe’s Raven goes to the sad man who is lamenting for his love, and says the one word that he knows, which is “Nevermore.” The Raven basically tells the man that his love will never come back, and on every statement or question, he merely answers “Nevermore!” At first, the raven is a mere guest to the man, but as the conversation continues, the man realizes that he does not want the bird with him. He tries to have the bird leave, but “Nevermore” keeps coming back at him. already it’s clear that it is late at night and a man is weak and tired trying to ease his sorrow by reading old books of “forgotten lore” (DiYanni 1173). Then the poem goes on to tell that there is a tapping at his chamber door. When he opens the door he is surprised to find, “Darkness there and nothing more” (1173). He whispered into the darkness “Lenore,” hoping that his lost love had returned, but all that was heard was, “an echo [that] murmured back the word, ‘Lenore!’”(1173). Angered and perplexed, he turns back into his chamber, suddenly there is a loud tapping at the window lattice.
In the text it states “But the raven, sitting lonely on the placid bust, spoke only that one word, as if his soul in that one word he did outpour” (Poe). The Raven is like the afterlife of Lenore and her trying to give guilt for the things he had done. As the Raven only uses one word “Nevermore” it could be the bird following him around as a reminder of things he has done and give him guilt. After every question he would ask he would only get one reply from the Raven. This ties together with the Masque of the Red Death because he talks about darkness and fear.
Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven” follows the story of a young man who is sadden by the death of a woman named Leonore. As the reader advance through the poem, the main character is getting more and more emotionally unstable. He is clearly suffering from some kind of mental illness most likely depression. The narrator is in first person, we are living the poem through the eyes of the main character. (He compulsorily constructs self-destructive meaning around a raven’s repetition of the word 'Nevermore ', until he finally despairs of being reunited with his beloved Lenore in another world. Just because of the nightmarish effect, the poem cannot be called an elegy.) Poe use vivid details to describe how the narrator is gradually losing his mind.
Through symbolism in stanza seventeen, we see that just as the raven remains with the suffering young man, even after the narrator demands that he leave, so does the grief. The raven replies, “Nevermore”, to this request. As the narrator discovers, grief doesn’t go away just because we ask it. In stanza eighteen, when describing the ever-present raven, the narrator states, “And his eyes have all the seeming of a demon’s that is dreaming.” This particular quote states a metaphor, where the narrator compares the raven to a demon. The poem consists of an undeniable narrative structure. Told from the third person, Poe also uses symbolism to create a strong melancholy tone. For instance, both midnight and December symbolize an end of something and the hope of something new to happen.
