Rationale for choosing communication skill
The skill I have decided to work on is communication. Simply put, communication is the ability to pass across information from one place to another either verbally, in writing, visually or by non-verbal means. Effective communication is essential aid both in personal and business realms. It is an essential tool for promoting good relations at the workplace as well as boosting productivity. Inability to communicate clearly will result to connect with other human beings and convey your thoughts clearly to your audience. To do this, I will be involved in Toronto innovation club, York marketing Association as well as York entrepreneur’s society.
¬ Watch videos and tutorials of efficient communicators, the challenges they went through and how they overcame them on their way to mastering this important life skill. In an assignment where I will be required to make a sale to a client, for instance, I will have to watch tutorial videos on negotiation, persuasion and customer service. I have a collection of Tony Robbins, Sir Ken Robinson videos on communication I want to study and an enrolment in an online business and enterprise skills course to help me better improve communication with my customers. My best asset when communicating would be my ability to empathize with other people. I am very good at putting myself in others shoes and I think that makes me a better communicator. People appreciate when you feel for them, and feel cared
Another beneficial skill that I can incorporate in human service is the ability to work and interact well with diverse cultures and groups. This skill can be implied when working with diverse groups of clients or other professionals in an interdisciplinary team. Moreover, I am able to work and facilitate cooperation with other professions and respect the different areas of knowledge and expertise. This would also include expanding potential networks with people outside the organization, as well as building further rapport with staff, including my supervisor.

The skills that I am referring to are Oral and Written Communication, Interpersonal, and Teamwork skill. These sets of skills have been identified US dept of Labor and other universities and learning Centers as the essential skills every person needs.
Communication skills are one of the most important management skills, needed for success and progress of any manager in the world. Manager who has excellent communication skills can effectively and successfully represent the company in front of outside audience and major stakeholders. Manager who has good communication skills can easily interact with other colleagues, senior management and other executives of the organization.
As an Organizational Communication Major, it is even more important for me to recognize my communication strengths and weaknesses, as I go out in the world and become employed my career depends on my ability to communicate. I have no room to sweep my strengths and weaknesses under the rug, I have to recognize them and fix them, so I am as well equip as I can possibly be.
This reflective essay will critically review my personal and professional skills that I am less confident in whilst in practise, which is essential for communication and developing effective relationships with others in an organization and even for personal development. The skills identified for improvement was highlighted in a skills audit for communication and effective relationships. A SWOT analysis was carried out to focus on the skills recognised, where finally an action plan was made to address how to improve the skills, what the challenges would be to develop them and how it is beneficial. During the training, communication skill plays a major role in making my work succeed. I need to use the skill in order to convince my higher up to receive and accept my work. Talk fluently also important in order to make sure our ideas and message to be delivered well. This give me chance to improve my communication skill.
Communication skills involve written or oral abilities of an authentic leader. Writing letters, writing reports, and heading meetings are good examples of communication skills needed by an authentic leader. These skills are also important for a leader in building relationships with the followers of an organization. Drucker (2011) in the Harvard Business Review article points out that “Organizations are held together by information rather than by ownership or command”(p. 31). For me, communication skills are an essential tool that I need to learn and practice more to do a better job in my leadership career.
It is not easy to understand significance of some things and their impact until you actually undergo them. Ability to effectively communicate and work is one such thing. Before I started business communication class, I was very pessimistic about my communication abilities and my competence in rapidly evolving field of business communication. I was unconfident and nervous on my first day of class. I quickly realized that business communication is course that you will never learn until you energetically engage in various situations of listening and speaking. However, with all wonderful experiences of participation in the class, I personally felt that I gained a real experience without even working in an organization. Interactive nature of the class combined with wonderful teaching of Diana has really helped me to gain immortal knowledge. Through this course, I have refined my communication skills and strengthened my confidence to deliver professional standards and competencies emphasized by potential employers. I would like to share how each module of the course helped me to hone my interpersonal skills:
Communication is one of the most important factors in our lives. It dictates the relationships formed with the individuals in personal and professional lives. Effective communication provides a foundation for trust and respect to grow. It also helps better understand a person and the context of the conversation. Individuals often believe that their communication skills are much better than what they actually are. Communication appears effortless; however, much of what two people discuss gets misunderstood, thus leading to conflicts and distress. To communicate effectively, one must understand the emotion behind the information being said. Knowing how to communicate effectively can improve relationships one has at home, work and in social affairs. Understanding communication skills such as; listening, non-verbal communication and managing stress can help better the relationships one has with others.
There are five skills I hope to improve on in order to learn more effectively. These skills include time management, organization, communication, collaborative relationships, and stress management. Time management is a key skill in order to accomplish tasks in a timely manner. Due to the immense volume of information I need to process, I believe time management will allow me to balance my time and duties. Additionally, organization produces order and structure. This allows the information to be arranged in a sequential manner, so I can connect the dots. Most importantly, I can see the big picture by organizing the information
Being able to communicate effectively in a professional manner is vital in most, if not all, career paths. This statement brings up some important questions. Do potential employers really care about an applicant’s communication skills? How will I use communication skills in my own career? How has college improved my own professional communication skills? Understanding how to communicate in a professional manner can help people in their careers and I feel improving my own communication skills will benefit me now and in the future.
.... I have a plan in order to maintain growth and development in all three types of communication. Primarily and most obviously, I must consciously practice all of the skills and knowledge I have learned. Secondly, not being afraid to ask for, and accept, constructive feedback from others will be a huge contributor to recognizing and following up with needs for improvement in any communication areas. Finally, sharing what skills and knowledge I have gained in this class with others will help to improve and maintain my own communication skills by surrounding myself with an environment filled with people who are also competent communicators. The more people who understand effective communication, the better the understanding between each person in society overall. I hope to follow through with all of these propositions to become an even better communicator in the future.
