Due to the wide speed of the Christianity around the world, Bible deeply affects the western culture. There are many useful and up-to-date marriage thought and system in the Bible. In the fourth century, the Roman Emperor Constantin made Christianity as the state religion. From then on, Christianity spread throughout Europe and the Bible’s influence on people become deeper and deeper. Within the first chapter of the book Kostenberger’s God, Marriage and Family identifies the cultural problems of our nation. In this chapter the author discusses how sexual immorality, homosexuality and sexual confusion are among the major threats of how our culture is now defining relationships. The author says that this is more than a problem of culture, he says that this is rooted in something more than that. I think he might be dramatic about the who issue. I do not necessarily think that the way we live our lives in threatened by sexual sin. I think our God is bigger than that. Kostenberger thinks that we must go back to the old roots of marriage in the bible to start healing from the pain that sexual sin has caused against our nation. He says that when a couple is struggling that they should do more than just work on their communication skills, they should work on the idea of becoming “one flesh”. I agree with this, I think that if two people are completely following Christ and they give their whole lives to God than they can not have an unhappy marriage.

Throughout the years, societies view on marriage and cohabitation has been changing, especially from the 1950s up until now. Marriage and cohabitation are in relation to social location, education, immigration and social class. In addition, these changes are influenced through socialization and their surrounding environments as people’s beliefs and expectations vary from what a defined family really is. Same-sex couples are now getting married and the divorce rate is on the rise, including non-married couples raising children. Most importantly, each individual determines who they marry or whom they share their love with through conditioning or in the course of shared similarities. People have dissimilar values, beliefs and attitudes and throughout the life course may change again, including the future generations. Marriage has existed longer than written history and there still a great demand. Over half of the adult population in the United States is married which consists of over 2 million people. At some point, two thirds of all Americans heterosexual or homosexual will vow to better or for worse till death do us apart. Despite, the recent decreased in the amount of people to get married, it’s still at a soaring 80 percent. Marriage is an integral part of who we are as humans but the real question is that because of evolutionary development or creation by God. These two belief systems play a fundamental role in the way we understand and live out marriage. The first view is evolutionary development which believes that marriage wasn't created by God and it was not originated in the beginning, however it was develop by society in the context culture. Many marriages attested to the consequences of splendid and poor marital choices. These marriages exhibited themselves as either “a marriage compared to bearing the cross. A union compared to a foretaste of heaven.” The author, Gary Thomas, focused on Matthew 6:33 as a good example of purposely striving for God’s best within marriage and finding a blessed marriage. Many people disregarded Matthew 6:33 when searching for a marriage partner and dated on the basis of love and attraction. However, this verse, when abided by, showed a respectable guide for objective dating. When someone first fell in love, they tended to lose reason due to infatuation. This purloined their reasoning abilities and proved dangerous in dating. Instead, Mr. Thomas suggested that overlooking their infatuation to evaluate their reasons in dating and marriage based on godliness, character, and purpose proved far better. As people sought for a closer relationship to God, they developed a proper perspective of marriage.

These questions arise from our own desires as Christians to reflect a biblically sound attitude towards sexuality and relationships. That same desire to act according to biblical scriptures is subject to opposition from today’s culture and views about sexual relationships, gender, and roles. A new definition of marriage, sexual orientation, and sexual practices is challenging our relationship with God and our view of human sexuality. Bishop John Spong defines sex and its impact on relationships: “Sex can be called at once the greatest gift to humanity and the greatest enigma of our lives. It is a gift in that is a singular joy for all beings and enigma in its destructive potential for people and their relationships.” (Spong, 1988)
