Rat Bite Fever is an infectious disease that is caused by two different strands of bacteria. Streptobacillary Rate Bite Fever is caused by Streptobacillus moniliformis and is found primarily in the United States. Spirillary Rat Bite Fever is caused by Spirillum minus and is mostly found in Asia. Most people get Rat Bite Fever from infected rodents or contaminated food or water and if not treated, the infection can become very severe or fatal.
In this paper, I will discuss the types of Rat Bite Fever, transmission of the infection, environmental factors, risk factors, clinical manifestations, treatment and prevention.
I chose Rat Bite Fever because my friend’s brother, Kevin, contracted this infection about seven years ago and was actually hospitalized due to his symptoms. Kevin had just received a pet rat for his birthday and while handling it, it scratched him. That night, he started to feel lethargic and he started to get a rash that looked like flat red dots on his arms and hands. The next morning, he woke up still feeling fatigued and he had spiked a temperature. By the next day, he stated that it hurt to walk and move, so at that point his parents took him to the doctor. Kevin was admitted and lab work was drawn up on him. After the doctor found out that he had a pet rat, he diagnosed him with Rat Bite Fever. Kevin received antibiotics and a couple days later, he was feeling much better.
I thought this topic would be make a great research topic because it is not common and most people have not heard about it. From my research, it is very interesting and kind of scary because it can be contracted from any type of rodent or rodent feces and mucous membranes.

Rat Bite Fever, caused by S. moniliformis and S. minus, is an under-recognized and under-reported disease characterized by sudden on-set of fever, rigors, and migratory polyarthraglgias; it carries a mortality rate of approximately 10%. Although S. moniliformis and S. minus are exquisitely susceptible to penicillin, most patients experience treatment delays due to nonspecific nature of the clinical features, a broad differential diagnosis list and difficulties in culture diagnosis. However, the changing epidemiology of rodent exposure, together with the risk of severe, invasive disease is left untreated, suggests that Rat Bite Fever and S. moniliformis and S. minus should occupy a more prominent place in our diagnostic thinking.
