On August 6 2015, The Globe and mail published an article name “Rape long shadow: Dealing with personal costs of sexual harassment. The article talks about women who have been sexually assaulted and raped and how public is unaware of the consequences these women have to deal with after the incident. Women being raped and sexually assaulted are not very comfortable talking about their experience, however one of the victim from the article mentioned how much it has impacted her everyday life and her intimated relationship after the tragedy. Another victim mentioned that us as public is focused on violence as sexual in nature so we do not see it as crime. In Canada, within one year 460,000 people reported sexual report. The annual financial cost comes up to be $1.9 billion that is spent on purposes dealing with physical, emotional, health, social services, police court and employers for the sexually assaulted and raped victims.
Women facing such tragedy go through emotions like shame, anger and devastating grief while some also suffer from panic attacks. Victims feel devalued, overwhelmed by humiliation and become drug addicts as well. One woman described the effect of rape on her as “Secret Tumor” because she cannot talk about it to others and it ends up being a secret to herself through out her life. After the attack there is a lot of shock and gut fear. However, if the victim knows the rapist there is more guilt and self-doubt. Furthermore, physical trauma also follows that includes injuries, bruises, sexually transmitted disease and pregnancy. Emotional damage takes up more time to heal than physical damage such as anxiety, long-term insomnia and thought of suicide.

... studies but unfortunately for a psychology course a peer-reviewed article was very challenging to find. Some that I chose were either too old for the assignment or were not peer reviewed. My second choice was York University libraries that had many to choose from but were addressing either both male and female rapes and forced marital rapes which did not connect well to my topic. Furthermore, after several attempts from both Google and York libraries I finally found my research journal on a website called Scholar portal Journal. They had a variety of peer reviewed articles and had a subject field option where you could put your subject relating your topic which made it easy to find rape related articles within the year limit assigned for the assignment. The keywords that helped with the research articles were rape, consequences of rape, women and sexual assault.
