Growing up with only one parent in today’s society is not an unusual thing. For many years, children growing up in a single-parent family have been viewed as different or weird. Being raised by a single parent seems impossible for many people to comprehend, but over the decades it has become more prominent and relevant. Coming from a single-family household does not belittle your ability to be successful, but prepares you to be more emotionally stable and successful whether you have two parents or one. The matter lies in the distinction between children who are raised by a solitary parent versus children who are raised by both a mother and a father. Does a child need both parents to be successful? Children in single parent homes live very complicated lifestyles and will often grow up with many hardships. Single parent homes are becoming normal in today’s society and are beginning to outnumber nuclear two parent families. Being a single parent is hard when it comes to balancing a job, money, a place to live and on top of that raising a child. The struggles of the parent takes an enormous toll on the child with lifelong effects.
Being a parent is no easy job for a mother or a father in even the best of circumstances, in fact not only is it the hardest job one will ever do, it is also a job that is never done. Being a parent is not a nine to five job with nights and weekends off. Rather it is a twenty-four seven job until the day that you die. This is not to say that parenting does not have its rewards. One of the largest shifts in the family structure is the percentage (34%) of children and adolescents living with an unmarried parent. What exactly defines a single-parent household? “A single parent household can be defined as families where a parent lives with dependent children, either alone or in a larger household, without a spouse or partner.” This is an issue that continues to rise progressively each and every year, which in result has become a major concern to social scientists, child psychologists, and public officials across the nation. Webster dictionary defines the term social justice as “a state or doctrine of egalitarianism”. Single Parenting has recently brought many conflicts into various homes in the United States. The United States has changed its views and taken a more liberal stance on issues such as divorce and having a child out of wedlock. It breaks the doctrine ideas of the emotional stable put together family. “More than one third of children in the United States are living without a father in the household”(Andersen). The U.S. has become lenient with divorce; however studies now show there could be more than just having one parent to care for the child. The United States also sees this issue from a selective perspective; there are many assumptions with children living in a single parenting household. The issues of economic hardship, quality of parenting, and exposure to stress. It is believed that not having the perfect family can compromise a family’s idea of a “perfect family” due to the limited resources, reasoning and emotional support.
The Family structure has changed significantly in the last fifty years. With higher percentages of marriage ending in divorce, and higher rates of childbearing out of wedlock, single parent families are increasing rapidly. “Seventy percent of all the children will spend all or part of their lives in a single-parent household.” (Dowd) Studies have shown that the children of these families are affected dramatically, both negatively and positively. Women head the majority of single- parent families and as a result, children experience many social problems from growing up without a father. Some of these problems include lack of financial support, and various emotional problems by not having a father around, which may contribute to problems later in life. At the same time, children of single-parent homes become more independent because they learn to take care of themselves, and rely on others to do things for them.
In today’s society many grow up in a single parent household and it may effect some different than other’s. For instance you can look at the percentage of race and how it affects each. For one can look at a black family and see the effects it has on them. Black families are in the high percentage range of growing up in a single parent home. The outcome has little effect on than that of a white family. Not all black families are single parent homes, but the ones that are may be due to parent killed, in prison, or just do not know who their father’s. To compare to a white family growing up in a single parent house can have a higher effect. White families may experience being in a single parent household due to parents getting divorced or death.

Single parent households are becoming very common in all racial and ethnic groups because it is no longer required for people to be married before they have children. Most households only have one parent because of divorce, never being married, separated, widowed, or because of business. The most common are, separation, divorce and just simply never being married. In these cases it is usually the mother who is the single parent. It is not too often that you see a father taking care of their child by themselves. This is usually because they do not know how, or they simply do not want to take care of their child. Statistics show that family structure has a big impact on certain characteristics of a child such as their attitude and level of respect. Children tend to be less respectful to people because they do not respect the parent who is not around. In many cases a child may become depressed living with only one parent causing them to get out of control and do things that they shouldn’t. Sometimes the child may feel like they are incomplete leaving them to do crazy things to find what they feel like they are missing. often times the child feels that they are the reason their parents are not together.

But one thing is for sure; all areas of child development can be affected due to a missing parent, including social, cognitive emotional, and physical areas. The advantage of a traditional family is that they are going to have a more stable income that will buy them a reasonable house or an apartment. “The traditional families have two parents, the mom and the dad, jointly raising kids with help and advice from each other” (Magnier). Being a single parent states that an individual is strong enough to carry the parts of two roles in a house. Single parents are a good influence on their children and any other individuals because they can take care of their financial problems, have greater control over their kids, and the children tend to have greater independence when living with a single parent.
