Raft of the Medusa
The piece of art known as the Raft of the Medusa was painted by Theodore Gericault during the years of 1818 and 1819. It is an oil painting. In the painting you can see a raft in the ocean with a bunch of people on it. The raft takes up a huge portion of the painting. Some of the people on the raft are waiving cloths around at what appears to be a ship off on the horizon, on the other hand, there are also people on the raft who appear to have died. The raft appears to have a sail which is mounted horizontally. There are also huge waves around the raft. There are dark clouds off to the right of the raft and there is light on the left of the raft. The painting presents a feeling of chaos and disaster. It does this by its use of light, color, light, shadows, and even space.
In regards to first impressions of the artwork, the viewer’s eve is first drawn to the large raft in the center of the painting. The focal point in the painting is the ship on the horizon. In the painting the skin tones of the people who are dead is drastically lighter than those of the people who are alive. It also uses color to show the darkness of the clouds which means that there was a storm and it uses lighter colors for the sky which means that the storm has passed. The painting uses color to draw your eye to the people waving their colorful clothes around. This in return draws your eye to the spec of color on the horizon which represents a ship. On the other hand, it also draws your eye to the man who is holding a little boy toward the back of the ship with the color of what appears to be a scarf on his head. The focal point of the painting are the figures that look like letters and numbers that are in the front of the piece of art. This is where your eyes expend more time, also sometimes forgiving the background. The way the artist is trying to present this piece is showing happiness, excitement, and dreams. Happiness because he transmits with the bright colours. After probably 15 minutes on front of the painting I can feel that the artist tries to show his happiness, but in serene calm. The excitement that he presents with the letters, numbers and figures is a signal that he feels anxious about what the future is going to bring. In terms of colours, the white colour dominates in this painting. It signifies purity, freedom and change. In the past the rulers have dominated over the people but now the prevailing power is in the hands of the peasants. The large green leaves, echoing the horse`s mane in the painting symbolise the revival of the human mind and notify of the arriving change in people`s lives.

“The Raft of the Medusa”, by Theodore Gericault, 1819, was inspired by the catastrophic wreck of the French frigate, The Medusa, on July 2, 1816, off the west coast of Africa, during a voyage to Senagal. The ship ran aground on the Arguin Reef, in calm seas. In an attempt to preserve the lives of 400 passengers aboard, the crew, soldiers, sailors and passengers built a raft, manned the lifeboats and the raft, and abandoned the Medusa. What followed was a most harrowing experience that would challenge the soul and condemn the government of a world power.

Although the painting itself displays many impressive artistic styles, it is also important to consider the artwork’s historical context. The Raft of the Medusa depicts the aftermath of the shipwreck of the French naval frigate Médusa, which crashed off the African coast. The desperate passengers then built a makeshift raft from the pieces of the destroyed ship, which is the moment depicted in Géricault’s painting. Particularly, The Raft of the Medusa was a contemporary piece that commented on the practice of slavery and the incompetence of the new French government in the early 19th century. From the beginning, the four characters in the aftermath of a shipwreck do not know "the colour of the sky" but all of them know "the colours of the sea." This opening strongly suggests the symbolic situations in which human beings are located in the universe. The sky personifies the mysterious, inconceivable cause of reality , which humans cannot understand, and the sea symbolizes the earthy, mundane phenomenon, which humans are supposed to perceive. The symbolic picture generated by the above conflict implies the overall relationship between the individual and nature. In fact, the daily life of human beings is at the mercy of the uncontrollable waves of the sea; while, at the same time, the essential part of reality remains unknown to feeble, helpless humans.
Looking at landscape art, especially when painted by one of the masters, many have undoubtedly pondered: what would it be like to live there? Shapes and attention to detail are, of course, important in a painting. However, it is color that draws the eye and inspires the heart. Oscar Wilde, an Irish poet and dramatist, spoke well of this when he noted that, “Mere color, unspoiled by meaning, and unallied with definite form, can speak to the soul in a thousand different ways. (qtd in “color”)”. Vincent Ward had a similar understanding of this impact when, in 1998, he directed the movie What Dreams May Come. Looking at this film, one can easily imagine being inside a living painting. The use of color to emphasize the emotional state of a character or event is common in films; nevertheless, Director Ward goes even farther in using color to represent the actual characters themselves. Red is the shade chosen to signify Annie and likewise, blue is used for Chris. Both of these, as will be shown, are accurate in defining these fictitious people. However, it is the profound use of purple in this film that is the true focal point. When mixing red and blue paint, one would find that, after being mixed, they cannot be separated. Likewise, this is true of the life and love these characters build and share. Purple represents the many ways in which Chris and Annie are melded, and joined.

The dull grass and trees lack vivid colors and present a lackluster mood. Yet, the yellow grass draws you to the horizon of the painting. This seems to resemble the hopefulness of a new crop in the dry crop land. The yellow grass shows the harsh results of a drought that has been sprinkled with blue horizontal streaks. The blue horizontal streaks demonstrate puddles of water as if it has recently rained. The blue color emits a feeling of calmness as if the uneasiness of the drought season has been lifted.
